Flint the Time Detective (originally known in Japan as Space-Time Detective Genshi note Jikuu Tantei Genshi-kun) was a children's anime premiering in 1998 which greatly combines elements from Mons Series and Time Bokan.Young caveman Flint Hammerhead (Genshi) and his father Rocky Hammerhead (Dad-tan) were turned into fossils by the villainous time traveler Petra Fina (Time Pilfer). Luckily, they were found in the 25th century by Tony Goodman (Tokio Yamato) and his sister Sara Goodman (Sora Yamato) who brought them to their uncle Dr. Bernard Goodman (Professor Yamato). He managed to restore Flint but was unable to fully restore Rocky, so Rocky was fashioned into a hammer which Flint could use.Flint, Rocky, Sara and Tony then join the Time Police with the purpose to travel to different historical eras to recover mechanical creatures called Time Shifters while opposing the Dark Lord and his servants, Petra Fina and her henchmen Dino and Mite. Joining our heroes was the mysterious Merlock Holmes (Kyoichiro Narugami), who was rather attracted to Sara.Flint and company need to collect all the Time Shifters so they don't damage the timeline. These are nice creatures not doing it on purpose, but Petra Fina can use a rubber stamp control and transform them into hideous monsters called Con forms which the heroes must revert through the Power of Friendship. | |

Remember the New Guy?: The star-shaped Time Shifter Orbit, capable of encouraging people, just shows up at the start of the series finale, when Flint, on his way to the Land of Dread, encounters her in the timestream. Elfin was this to those with the English dub, as his episode, the Christmas Episode, didn't air until after the series finale! This was even worse in the Dutch dub, where Fox Kids had a strict policy of not airing any Christmas themed episodes. This means he just appears without any explanation at all. The Korean dub of the show, called "4th Dimensional Detective Ttolbi"note 4ì°¨ì›� íƒ�ì • 똘비/Sa-chawon Tamjeong Ttolbi, note that "Ttolbi" is the Korean-ized dub name for whom is known as Flint in the English dub, removed the episodes that took place in ancient Japan because of bumpy political and social relations between South Korea and Japan at the time note South Korea just got done partially lifting a long-standing ban on Japanese media at the time, and the show was lucky it even got dubbed in Korean to begin with. Even today, there's still a lot of hate for the Japanese in Korea for various reasons (let's just say that Korea doesn't have the best memories of ancient Japan and leave it at that). So for Koreans, this trope applies to a few more time shifters as well. | |

Since in the original Japanese he can only talk in Pokémon Speak, he makes this declaration through a series of charades. note He spanks his rear end (o/behind), drags out Mite (Maito), dresses like a matador (ore/olé), walks through an open door (to/door), flails around as if in pain (itai/pain), removes a single ball from a basket (ichi/one), shows off his hand (de/hand), holds up a bottle of soy sauce (shouyu), and shows off the bottle's label (fuda/label). Altogether, this forms "o maeto ore to ittai ichi de shoubu da," or "I challenge you to a one on one duel." The English dub keeps this sequence intact, resulting in a very awkward attempt to convey a similar message with the same gestures. note Flint reads his charades as "To the rear with friends (Mite), this is a challenge (matador) and he who goes out (door) crying (pain) leaves one (ball) with the upper hand." (The gestures using the soy sauce and label are omitted in the dub.) Since in the English dub the Time Shifters are capable of full speech, Flint even lampshades that Blademan could have just said this normally. | |
