However, he still controls the monsters of the forest, which all combined vastly outnumber the decimated Loyalists. On top of that, he's preparing to enact a spell that will strip the world of its free will, so Twilight and the others know that they have to finish the war with this last battle, or they lose everything. So really, in a way it's a Last Stand for both sides.

Spike also disappears pretty quickly. His absence is played for drama with Twilight, who has to work through her parental concern for him in addition to the rest of her issues, but he doesn't play much importance in the plot. Until, of course, he is found alive. And then becomes even more unimportant to the plot than before.
