It's mentioned that Matt's own father was an alcoholic and prior to his death they had a dysfunctional relationship mirroring the one Matt currently has with Mello. Kimiko talks about how emotionally distant her and Misa's parents were to her, especially their father, likely because she was the product of an extramarital affair. One can only speculate the extent to which their favoritism and high expectations influenced Misa and her current issues.
