Poor Communication Kills: Gladion was aware of exactly what caused his sister's Trauma-Induced Amnesia. Unfortunately, he decided that only he could fix everything, and rather than sharing what he knew with anyone, kept Lillie and everyone else Locked Out of the Loop while he embarked on a quest to become a powerful trainer. Upon learning that Lusamine hadn't known about the incident like he'd assumed, he accused her of being a negligent mother, refusing to acknowledge the role he'd played in that. His adventure on the Infinity Train is sparked off by an argument with Lillie over this, where she points out how she might have gotten help years ago if he'd spoken up sooner. Lillie's entire life could've potentially been better if Gladion actually told someone like Professor Kukui or Wicke what he knew much, much sooner. Mallow's attempt to warn Lillie that her gift could send her or Gladion into 'a bad place' fails since her friend doesn't realize she's speaking literally. She even tries to ask others if anyone is worried about where he is. But since she never brings up the Infinity Train (For fear of people thinking she's crazy), no one will believe her (except Captain Phyco because he's somewhat aware of the mythos connected to the Train itself). When Lillie talks about Gladion abandoned her to Dulse and left her with her trauma, Dulse questions why Lillie kept it bottled up and never told Lusamine. After all, what was preventing her from talking to her mother? The film Gladion is Forced to Watch in the Fog Car reveals one of the answers to that question: shame. Lillie truly had no idea why she was so afraid of Pokémon, and just wanted to be normal and not burden others with her problems. And all of this could've been avoided if Gladion stayed and explained things to him. It's assumed that most of Specter's problems will only be solved if he manages to explain what's going on him. Ryoken is shocked to learn that Specter went behind his back to discuss the idea of having a bond with the Ignis (particularly his, Earth) and Easter is trying to get him to confess what's going on in his mind. It's gotten to the point that Alex Shepherd brutally attacks Paul London and impales him on a spear, nearly killing the wrestler because Specter didn't fess up sooner. Moreover, the situation with Dark Easter would never had happened if Specter took a few seconds to calm down and let them talk things through. Specter himself is ashamed at his actions when he learns the truth. | |

Training and fighting others proved exhausting, and he had to ensure he kept enough money on hand to afford hotel rooms. It's very telling that he considers these to have been great sacrifices on his part, as well. In Chapter 4, Gladion notes how far and between he would get for a decent shower and realizes why quests omit that part out of re-tellings. The quest itself has no guarantee of victory, and when it [[spoiler: fails, Gladion's journey just...ends, because he genuinely can't do anything more that won't make things worse or get him stuck onboard the train. The prospect that all that effort and sacrifice didn't amount to anything when something simple and humble would've done the job (at least with his sister) seriously wounds Gladion and kills his self-image as a knight. | |

Word of God reveals that Gladion never told anyone about his experiences and no one will find out about Gladion's journey until Chloe sees his statue. Since this is sometime after Book 2, even if Gladion meets Grace and Simon, it won't change anything since they won't be defeated until Chloe confronts them months later except for whatever plan Gladion stops them from enacting. Gladion feels cheated out of his goal but Larkspur reassures him that he still did some good and he was able to help Tokio finally return after two years. But even that becomes bitter because Tokio won't see Goh until long after Chloe leaves the train, meaning that Goh and Chloe will still have their fall-out. | |

Foreshadowing: While the introduction to the Toy Brick Car arc is titled "The Six Swans", the opening fable instead tells the tale of a mouse making a disastrous deal with a cat. This makes more sense after the Black Tyrant is revealed as Penelope Mouse. The insignia of the Black Tyrant's armor will look quite familiar for those into Sly Cooper and the fairy tale that begins The Toy Brick Car is a parallel to a certain mouse from the series... The 400 Rabbits Car has a lot of foreshadowing. The fairy tale that starts the 400 Rabbits Car is a retelling of Paul London's story in Lucha Underground Season 4, when he murdered Mascarita Sacrada in order to obtain guidance from the White Rabbit, an action he will have to repeat on Lampetia. Similarly, the "White Rabbit" in the story is actually a human. So is the White Rabbit of the 400 Rabbits Car. On their way to the White Rabbit's Domain, London remarks the time he held someone hostage with a carrot. Next chapter, he tries to attack Gladion's Umbreon with a carrot. Kisaragi offers a drink to Gladion to which Gladion immediately refuses as he is paranoid of what would happen if he drinks it. That same drink was given to Tokio. Tokio wished Grace died alone while repeatedly bashing her in the stomach. Two stories later, his wish comes true as she dies when Ogami repeatedly stabs her in the stomach. When London asks where Easter comes from, they point to the ceiling. London assumes that Easter is a guardian angel to protect Specter. Lin confirms that it's almost accurate; Easter is from the sky, because they're a lightning bolt that struck Specter, and they do want to help Specter. When Death Eye shapeshifts into the worst fears of the White Gestalt, for Specter it turns into a large clay golem. The next chapter reveals that Specter has been talking to Yusaku, Takeru and Aoi about their Ignis and knowing about Earth, who also is a clay golem. | |

Dramatic Irony: Gladion insists that everything he did was for Lillie's sake... while completely dismissing how she feels about any of it, or the impact his decisions had on her. When she confronts him, he dismisses her anger as ignorance and ingratitude. Part of his indignation stems from his belief that he's the only reason why she was able to overcome her Trauma-Induced Amnesia. The irony of this is that's exactly what she's so angry about — because HE retained his memories of that incident and chose to keep her Locked Out of the Loop for years. And would have continued keeping her in the dark if not for circumstances entirely out of his control. Circumstances that he was furious about at the time. Though he admired the White Knight's nobility and dedication, he mentally notes that he doesn't want to be a bumbler who missed obvious details. And yet, his willful ignorance and dismissal of anything that doesn't suit his story makes him closer to that character than he cares to admit. And he also has his own dorky moments. In Chapter 2, Ash assumes Gladion is going through some trials and he'll ask about Gladion's whereabouts. Gladion is going through trials...just not in the Alola region. Chapters later, he hopes that another Greenfield incident never happens again...Parker would like a big word with you... In the 400 Rabbits Car, Gladion tries to reassure Tokio that their friend forgave them for not showing up on time. Those who watched Journeys episode 32 recall that Goh called Tokio a liar and shut himself for not being there, and it caused more problems for Goh's friendship with Chloe down the line. Kisaragi's plan to stop the Apex involves the Apex killing off passengers in an attempt to realize how much pain they put. Gladion rejects it because of the line it crosses and convincing the Apex that what they're doing is justified. However, as Blossoming Trail reveals, it was when Simon killed Chloe and the unsettling revelation that denizens were formerly dead passengers came to light that the Apex realized that what they were doing is wrong and it ultimately ended with them separated. So while Kisaragi's plan was marred, he was right that the Apex would be appalled by their actions. | |

Double Standard: As the Author's Notes point out, the anime presented Gladion as a hero that boldly called Lusamine out for her ignorance, while glossing over the little detail that Gladion withheld vital information. The part he played in their family's tragedy was never called out, treating his quest for strength as noble self-sacrifice, never mind the impact it had upon others. Least of all Lillie, the one he was supposedly doing this all for. Moreover, while Gladion is on the train himself, this wouldn't have happened if Lillie didn't give that bouquet of orange lilies in the first place. So while he has to go through trauma on the train and have a high chance of being injured or killed, she can not give a fuck about her brother abandoning her. Call-Forward: Plenty, given that this is a prequel. The dark fairy tale that opens the Prologue features Gladion's counterpart suffering a Fate Worse than Death due to his obsessive pursuit of the King with No Name, much like how the story Chloe pens featuring an Expy of Goh punishes him for chasing after the wish-granter. Ash's surprise at just how quickly things devolved between Lillie and Gladion hints how in time he'll be similarly caught off guard by just how many boiling problems existed with Chloe. Gladion wished to be the white knight from Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. The next story's main protagonist was a true lover of Alice in Wonderland. In Chapter 1, Ash hopes that the situation with Gladion and Lillie doesn't repeat itself. Yeah, Goh and Chloe would like a word with you... Mallow's flashback to her run in The Hidden Temple Car has her pass by a list of artifacts yet to be found. One of them is a "Vessel of Solmon", representing the Brass Vessel of King Solomon Chloe will obtain when she enters that car. Larkspur mentions a Pokémon user who fought the Apex but failed. Blossoming Trail reveals that was Trip. Ash hopes that he never has to go through the Greenfield incident ever again. Tempting Fate at its finest, folks. Upon learning about the Infinte Radio Show, Gladion questions if there is a faster way to get information. Larkspur confirms that One-One is working on something called the "Infinet". The end of the 400 Rabbits Car has Tomas reading out the message Mallow sent with Captain Phyco and decides to use that to build the Signal Car. When in the Charcoal Car, Gladion questions who would ever use a donut holer in battle. In the Canals of Fondue Car, we see how Gladion became a hero in fighting the giant beast (Hippy-Hop) and his name as the White Wolf Trainer. It's later revealed that his marble statue would be built later, and it's there when Chloe enters the car in Blossoming Trail. In the Fog Car, Walter wants to have a go at Alex's prisoner (Specter). Alex snarks that Walter can have fun when he gets his own. | |

Deconstruction Fic: Of Gladion's Protagonist-Centered Morality. Gladion feels like he is the hero who went on an epic quest to help his sister. This story points out that he did more harm than good by keeping the Nihilego incident silent, and the hypocrisy of tearing into his mother for being oblivious when he chose not to tell her. Lillie realizes that a lot of what she went through could have been prevented (or at least lessened) if he had shared what he knew with others, and hadn't worked to keep her Locked Out of the Loop regarding her own missing memories. Rather than regarding him as her heroic older brother who gallantly protected her, she sees somebody who went haring off on his own, leaving her behind for years. One of the Central Themes is getting Gladion to recognize that not all of his actions were justified, and that no matter how much he wants to deny it, he unintentionally hurt his sister with his actions. Of grand quests. They're usually romanticized as great things, but the prologue story notes that most people don't want to tell how boring it is, or how people slept in the cold, or how they could be injured without anyone to heal them. And there's no guarantee that all that effort will actually pay off. Lillie's role as a Damsel in Distress. Gladion thought that she was a fragile flower who couldn't handle the weight of what happened, whereas the anime shows that she has a lot of courage and bravery in her — from going through Salandit to get Snowy's egg to even jumping off a building with the high chance of her dying to save her from Team Rocket — and Gladion just can't accept the fact that his sister grown stronger over the years and doesn't need saving. Least of all when it's arguably doing more harm than good. Adults Are Useless: The only reason they're so useless is because they don't have all the info. Gladion's decision to handle the situation by himself hampered any chances of his mother learning what happened until much later on. While Chloe was enthusiastic about meeting people from other worlds, Chapter 3 introduces a boy who instead resents his fellow passengers from coming from more exciting universes, boiling with resentment over the notion that they may never experience anything more magical than their time on the Train. | |

Easily Forgiven: Just like Blossoming Trail, the story shows how forgiveness is not given so quickly, but also that withholding it too long can cause problems. Mallow warns Lillie that while she doesn't have to forgive her brother immediately, putting together a whole bouquet of orange lilies as a passive-aggressive gift might be a bit much. Though Gladion is furious with Margaret, Larkspur stays his hand long enough for him to see that she's already suffering from the loss of her son. In "The Toy Brick Car" Robbie Jewell gets off lightly for causing the brick dragon incident with the only punishment they get is never being allowed in the car again. As for Penelope Mouse, the best they can get is that maybe one day they'll be forgiven. In the 400 Rabbits Car, Specter forgives Tokio for the mess that happened (particularly that his partner, Lampetia was destroyed) because it was never his fault and the boy has gone through a complete guilt complex over something that he wasn't supposed to be involved in. In the Windfish Car, Lin holds no hard feelings over what London did to Lampetia, stating that he did what was necessary. When she's revived, Lampetia herself doesn't hold it against London, as she did request it. | |
