Jerkass Has a Point: Played with. Mei's rebuttal to Shoto's self-pity towards losing his Quirk is true in the sense that Izuku has already proven that quirkless does not equate to useless. However, Shoto is right in that it's not the same; Izuku never had a quirk to begin with and as such would not understand suddenly losing something that you have possessed since you were four. Additionally most, if not all, quirkless people likely never had to deal with an abusive parent who raised them to beat All Might. While the decision that Todoroki was the real winner of the tournament was unpopular, and several characters do take offense to this (claiming that UA has a vested interest in making sure Quirked people stay in power...though how much of that is serious and how much of it is Unreliable Narrator is up to personal judgement), they do have a point that since the Indestructible armor was delivered to the ring after the match started, which was made pretty blatant by Mei, that does count as outside interference which was made explicitly clear was against the rules. However, the backlash would not have been as severe had UA actually disqualified Izuku from the start instead of allowing him to fight with the armor just so they could wrap up the Sports Festival with an epic Grand Finale. After revealing that they weren't planning on letting Izuku win, no matter the outcome, the announcement comes across as less following the rules and more as a needlessly petty Kick the Dog moment on UA's part. So in short, while Izuku could not have won due to outside interference and UA was within their rules to say that he was disqualified, the critics are also right in that UA handled it badly. | |
