They Really Do Love Each Other: Hikari, Luffy and Zoro have their moments, such as in the Romance Dawn Arc, where Luffy attacked Captain Morgan when the man moved to crack open Hikari’s head, the Kuro Arc where Luffy and Zoro take extra care helping Hikari recover from over-extending herself with opening Gates, or in the Baratie Arc, where Hikari and Luffy launched themselves at Mihawk to protect a badly-wounded Zoro. This happens again in the Loguetown Arc, where Hikari and Zoro immediately went to Luffy's rescue once hearing that he was being executed by Buggy. This culminates in the Drum Island Arc where Hikari gets sick instead of Nami, with Luffy and Zoro spending the chapter caring for her before they take her up the mountain. Foreshadowing: There have been hints to Hikari's past over the entire story, and none of them are pleasant. Some of the big ones are: In the Buggy Arc, when Hikari removes her top to make bandages for Zoro, they immediately notice a massive, aged bruise on her back in the shape of a boot. She made an excuse about being in a fight before meeting up with Luffy, but Pantherlily was noticeably uncomfortable while Luffy and Zoro clearly didn't believe her. Upon seeing Kaya's mansion in the Kuro Arc, Hikari grew incredibly uncomfortable, and Kuro's baiting of Usopp about his pirate father brought out a very aggressive reaction from her. While introducing her newest Celestial Spirits in the Baratie Arc, Hikari blows up on Zoro over a joke he made about 'what sort of princess curses like a sailor', having a major overreaction despite denying and trying to stop her spirits from calling her 'princess' the entire story so far. Luffy also noted how she had more than enough money to pay for repairs to the Baratie without even batting an eye, and Hikari hesitated a moment before saying she had saved up to go out to sea. When confronting Nami in the Arlong Arc, there were mentions of gilded cages and deep empathy with her, along with a chilling statement: In the final chapter of the Alabasta Arc, Hikari reveals that she knew Vivi from before their adventure and sparks the princess' memory by calling her 'bluebird'. The images that return are of bruises and fake smiles, hinting at a less-than-pleasant childhood. In the Jaya Arc, Usopp's tirade against Montblanc Cricket got a visceral reaction from Hikari when he claimed that, as a descendant of Montblanc Noland, he must be a liar. This is followed by her comforting a slumped Usopp in the aftermath with these words: In Part Three of the Skypiea Arc, Hikari tries to scrub off the feeling of Eneru's touch in the bath, her thoughts implying that this was not the first time a man had felt entitled to molest her in such a way and that she had escaped at some point. In the final part of the Skypiea Arc, Hikari reveals she knows about the Will of D when Robin reads out Gol D Roger's name. The Davy Back Fight Arc ends in a Cliffhanger, with Aokiji recognizing Hikari before a horribly one-sided fight and referring to her as Heartfilia. In the beginning of the Water Seven Arc, Hikari reveals a lot of knowledge about Water Seven and the Puffing Tom, as well as Iceberg, that are out of place with someone from East Blue. Part Three of the Water Seven Arc reveals that Hikari knows about Franky and his underworld connections, and also has her meeting with Iceberg privately in his office, chatting like old friends. She also reveals knowledge about CP 9, when their initial attempt at assassination is thwarted, and about the Buster Call that destroyed Ohara. In the Enies Lobby Arc, Hikari reveals knowledge of CP 9, Enies Lobby, and the Buster Call that are explicitly not meant to be common knowledge, and prods Robin to reveal the truth of Ohara to the world. On their way, when Zambai wonders why Robin would fight so hard against being saved, her response is sad and hints at past suicidal ideation. This culminates in the Return To Water Seven Arc, when the Star Guard ambush the Straw Hats and Hikari goes with them to protect the crew, apologizing for being selfish and ignoring the risks of her past. The Heartfilia Arc lays out exactly what she went through as a child up until she ran away only weeks before meeting Luffy, which included physical, mental and emotional abuse, on top of sexual harassment at best, that did nothing but make her guarded about being a caring, selfless human being and determined that none of her crew, or anyone else, ever feels like she does. | |

Underestimating Badassery: Besides the canon examples, this happens often in regards to Hikari. The earliest example? In Part One of the Romance Dawn Arc, where Alvida dismissed her as inconsequential and Hikari slammed her through a wall. An egregious example happened in the Arlong Park Arc, where Arlong locked her into a room, handcuffed and chained, and honestly thought she would not get out. This happens again in Part Four of the Alabasta Arc, where Crocodile left Hikari in his electric chair and expected her to still be there once he was done conquering Alabasta. Eneru is making the same mistake in Part Three of the Skypiea Arc, leaving Hikari completely unguarded and expecting her to play along rather than make any attempts to thwart him. The Star Guard make this mistake with the Straw Hats as a whole, believing themselves so above CP 9 power-wise that they think these rookie pirates won't stand a chance. They are proved very wrong. Gecko Moria repeats this mistake in Thriller Bark, thinking he can easily steal the Supernova Alliance's shadows on top of taking their three dragons for himself. Their counterattack is proving why this was a bad idea. Shiki learned nothing from previous examples and ends up with his twenty-year-long revenge destroyed for messing with the Supernova Alliance. | |

With that knowledge, she absolutely CRUSHED the Foxy Pirates in both of the first rounds, taking back Shelly and then stealing their treasure, before Luffy defeated their captain in a duel and stole their Jolly Roger, which she allowed Luffy to redraw for them as a reminder not to mess with the Straw Hats. In Water Seven, Hikari accidentally stumbled into CP 9's original assassination attempt of Iceberg, and realized immediately that they're threatening the Straw Hats with a Buster Call to effectively blackmail Robin into her own death. Immediately, she came up with a plan that effectively NEUTERED CP 9's efforts to force Iceberg's hand and only failed to stop them then and there because Lucci managed to get Blueno out to use his Door-Door Fruit. Unfortunately for them, Hikari had Sanji, Usopp and Gina waiting to sneak onto the Puffing Tom while the others followed on a repaired Rocketman, where she eventually revealed a streamlined plan to invade Enies Lobby in case they failed to retrieve Robin. This plan has the Straw Hats and their assorted allies cutting through Enies Lobby's main island in an HOUR, with no casualties and barely any real effort, before breaking into the Tower of Law to face down CP 9. When trapped in Thriller Bark, Nami and Usopp worry when they hear that one of their high-bounty crewmates was captured and can only hope it wasn't Hikari because of this trope, since they trusted her to figure out a plan to save everyone. Hikari proves this true when everyone regroups for a counterattack. This holds true again in Strong World, where Hikari takes a day to completely tear apart Shiki's 20-year-long revenge. Hikari is gearing up to do this again in Sabaody, only her target is the entire slave trade. None of the crews doubt she can completely destroy it. | |

An example is during the Baratie Arc, where she stood up for Ghin against Patty when he refused to serve him, even knowing he was a dangerous pirate. In the Arlong Arc, the fishman's punishing of Genzo for having weapons caused her to break cover and attack, even knowing she was outnumbered. When Tashigi insulted Zoro for walking away from their fight, Hikari snapped back at the Sergeant Major's Black-and-White Morality and her complaints on being born a woman, unable to stand by while someone else, even verbally, attacked her crew-mate. Crocodile, in trying to kill thousands of innocent people and breaking Vivi's heart in trying to take over Alabasta, has Hikari pushing herself past every limit to make sure they stop him. Bellamy gets his just desserts in Part Two of the Jaya Arc, where his attempt to beat on Luffy is stopped by Hikari before it begins, and she shows his crew why you do not mess with the key-holder of the Straw Hat Pirates. Eneru also gains her eternal hatred not only for subjugating the sky-islands, and especially Skypiea and Shandia, but for deciding he could just kidnap her for a forced wedding. When CP 9 take Robin and Franky to restore Pluton in Water Seven, Hikari shows that there's no bully too big for her to retaliate, immediately planning out how to thwart them and, when that failed, deciding to storm Enies Lobby without any hesitation. The Heartfilia Arc reveals that this is likely in response to her own abusive childhood, where her 'father' and his top subordinates used their power to bully her and everyone else on Estrella. Similar behavior by others, like Arlong for example, would be a strong reminder of this and cause such a strong reaction. You would think Gecko Moria might have gotten the hint, but he decides to bully the Straw Hats, particularly the children and Nami/Vivi/Usopp, while also stealing shadows from the others, and Hikari was not having it. | |

Berserk Button: You DO NOT want to threaten the crew or innocent people when Hikari is around. This is first hinted at in the Buggy Arc, where the harm Buggy inflicted on Luffy and Zoro, and tried to inflict on Mayor Boodle, only incited her anger. This is fully explored in the Kuro Arc, where Hikari insists on fighting the coming Black Cat Pirates because of Kuro’s plan to attack the innocent villagers and an unsuspecting Kaya for her fortune, on top of trying to kill Luffy to hide it. In the Baratie Arc, not only does she snap at Patty for hitting Ghin while he was down, she did not hesitate to join Luffy in attacking Mihawk when he sliced Zoro open, without thought to the consequences of attacking someone so much stronger than them. Arlong hits this button plenty in his own arc, until Hikari snapped and summoned Aquarius to wipe out his entire crew for not only oppressing Nami and threatening Usopp, but trying to force Momoo to attack them. Crocodile hits this before even meeting Hikari, when she meets Gina and realizes that he controls her with a shock collar. He then presses it again, throwing her into a calmer Tranquil Fury, by implying he's killed Luffy and is set to take over Alabasta. In Part Two of the Jaya Arc, it opens with an unnamed pirate learning a very important lesson; Luffy and Zoro do NOT appreciate when others insult Hikari in any way, and groping is asking for a world of pain. Bellamy is nearly ripped apart like a stag by hellhounds in the same arc by daring to ask how much it would cost to have Hikari on his crew, and only her mercy saved him from Luffy and Zoro. Eneru pushes this in Part Two of the Skypiea Arc, not only by kidnapping Hikari and hurting Gina, Chopper, Lassoo and Momoo, but by effectively taunting Luffy and Zoro that there's nothing they can do to stop him from marrying her. The entire crew gets their button pressed in the Water Seven Arc when Hikari reveals that CP 9 had blackmailed Robin into trying to betray them and effectively commit suicide to protect them from a Buster Call. As shown in the Enies Lobby Arc, they don't care about who you are, NO ONE messes with a Straw Hat! This is pushed for the entire crew again, once they get over the shock, after the Return To Water Seven Arc. A group of strange knights with Devil's Fruit powers attack them, and then take Hikari when she gives herself up to save everyone, even leaving behind her keys. Once the shock of finding out she's a World Noble fades and they learn a bit more of her past from Iceberg, the Straw Hats are more than ready to go kick the butts of anyone who gets in their way of getting Hikari back! This button is continuously pressed throughout the Heartfilia Arc as the Straw Hats and their allies learn more and more about Hikari's past. Law not only shows how much he hates those who would use poison to kill, but also loses his temper at the realization of Doflamingo's involvement. Gecko Moria pushes this button for the crew again, first by splitting them up (sending the children plus Nami, Usopp and Vivi inland while trapping the Sunny) and then by stealing shadows (Luffy, Zoro and Sanji) while trying to steal members, primarily Vivi, Kilala, Gina and Sora, and severely injuring others (Gina and Merry end up needing urgent medical care). Their counterattack is proving why this was unwise. Shiki learns very quickly that you don't threaten or kidnap the children of the Supernova Alliance, and his decision ends up causing his revenge plot of 20 years to fall apart. | |

While not as sweet or traditional an example, being a Cute Bruiser with a temper, she is very serious about protecting her ‘family’ and will destroy anyone who threatens them by any means necessary. Becomes an official mom to Chopper, Gina and Sora in the Skypiea Arc. Adds Merry, Lily, Ariel and Naia to that list in the Heartfilia Arc. Julia becomes part of this in the Supernova Alliance Arc, with Nox and Shuto set to join in after Thriller Bark. Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello and Michelangelo finally get a proper mother figure in Strong World. | |

Everyone's Baby Sister: Hikari is actually an example of this with her Celestial Spirits; Aquarius and Virgo especially see her as a younger sister or even daughter, having effectively raised her during an abusive childhood, and are thus extremely protective of her. The others are equally protective, since she either saved them from abusive key-holders or decades of loneliness, and Leo, for one, will pop up whenever she needs him no matter what Hikari says. It's not advised to see what they would do if she was genuinely hurt without her crew around to help. Sora and Nox are the most innocent of the "kids", and the crew frankly spoils them with affection and treats to make up for their dark pasts; even as powerful as combatant as Sora proves to be, being a Sky Dragon, and the potential Nox has as a Shadow Dragon, anyone who hurts them had better hope the crew never finds out. Like poor Kumadori once Sanji saw what he did to Sora. Merry, while newly humanoid, has always had a special place in the crew's hearts. Her fate in Water Seven very nearly broke them, and Hikari pushed past her own limits to ensure she was saved no matter the cost. Even in Estrella, the crew made sure to leave Merry with Sabo before breaking into the castle, so she would not end up in danger from the Star Guard again. There's no doubt if anyone threatened the little Zoan-ship, the Straw Hats would all come down on them like a tsunami of fury. | |

Dark and Troubled Past: In the Return To Water Seven Arc, the crew learns that Hikari is also hiding one of these. Not only was one entire side of her family, plus hundreds more, wiped out by the World Government before she was born, her mother Nyoko Dragneel was captured and effectively turned into a sex-slave by being forcibly married to Jomei Heartfilia with the intent of 'breeding' true Celestial Dragons. But Jomei also wanted an heir that was a key-holder, and when his son Akeno proved unable to summon Aquarius, threatened that if he didn't manifest as one soon, both he and his baby sister would be killed to make room for a son who could. This drove the seven-year-old to desperately swim into open ocean in a bid to summon the Celestial Spirit, where he got caught in a riptide. Hikari, all of four years old, swam out after him and managed to summon Aquarius, but it was too late to save her brother. Infuriated that his son was a 'failure' and his 'useless' daughter had dared to be a Celestial Dragon key-holder, Jomei then ordered his 'wife' to kill Hikari to make room for a 'proper heir'. Rather than poison the only child she had left, or live through seeing more of her children likely die or be similarly abused in pursuit of his ambition, Nyoko took the poison herself in secret and passed away roughly a month after her son, forcing Jomei to keep their daughter alive in order to even somewhat salvage his plans. What followed was fourteen years of emotional, mental and physical abuse, not just from Jomei but from his Star Guard, until Hikari was almost eighteen and set to be married to Donquixote Doflamingo to be similarly 'bred' for Celestial Dragons, which is when she ran away. | |
