If you're not watching the director's cut, you're not watching the real thing.The film follows the low-level government bureaucrat, Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce). Bored and disillusioned with his life as a cog in the dystopian machine he works for, Lowry have started to experience vivid daydreams of himself as a winged warrior saving a Damsel in Distress, and they are all set to the tune of the big-band hit "Brazil"; a song which he is growing increasingly obsessed with. One day, a technical error in Lowry's department's computer system results in the arrest and death during interrogation of the innocent cobbler Archibald Buttle instead of the suspected terrorist Archibald Tuttle (Robert De Niro). Lowry discovers the error when he sees that the wrong bank account has been debited for the arrest, and decides to attempt to offer Buttle's widow some kind of recompense by giving her a refund in person. As he visits her, he by pure chance catches a glimpse of Buttle's upstairs neighbor, a strange woman called Jill Layton (Kim Greist), who just so happens to eerily resemble the damsel from his dreams. Drawn to her because of his fantasies, Lowry discovers that her records have been sealed, meaning that she is probably under suspicion for involvement with terrorist activities. Lowry's simultaneous pursuit of the truth and the woman draws him into the higher echelons of the Ministry, and he gets increasingly caught up in a web of mistaken identities, mindless bureaucracy and lies.Especially notable for its imaginative and depressing "Somewhere In The 20th Century" setting, involving a Used Future (or past) of poorly-functioning Schizo Tech, a regime-mandated case of Too Many Ducts covering everything and anything. Along with Blade Runner and Max Headroom, it set the standard for 20 Minutes into the Future production design, scrambling the near future and the recent past into a vaguely familiar alternate present.Not to be confused with the large country in South America or the phantom island from Irish mythology that appeared in fellow Python Terry Jones's film Erik the Viking. The title actually refers to a recurring musical motif involving the Brazilian tune "Aquarela do Brasil", which features prominently throughout the soundtrack.

Also, by the end, the film implies that there aren't any terrorists at all, and the explosions are just the machinery malfunctioning as usual.
