Le fantôme de la liberté (The Phantom of Liberty) is a 1974 film by Luis Buñuel. It stars, among others, Monica Vitti. The film follows various characters, transmitting its attention from one to another in a seemingly random manner. We open in Toledo in 1808 and a strange story about a love between a French soldier and a dead noblewoman, which is being told as a story in 1970s France by a nanny to two girls, whose father is struggling with insomnia thanks to a series of odd nocturnal visitors, which he relates to his doctor, whose nurse has to visit her sick father, in the course of which she spends the night in a hotel with a bizarre assortment of other guests, one of whom delivers a lecture to a classroom of unruly policemen, two of whom stop a speeding motorist, who then receives a call about his missing daughter, who is returned by the Prefect of Police just before he gets a phone call from his dead sister... confused yet?

Hidden in Plain Sight: A surrealist example. A little girl is said to be lost by the teacher, although she's present in the classroom. When she addresses the teacher, her parents and policemen, they tell her not to bother them. They are all too busy searching for her. This doesn't change even when they ask her directly to assist them in putting together a description of herself for the search.

Your Normal Is Our Taboo: In one of the film's best-remembered scenes, Buñuel swaps conventional attitudes toward the two ends of the human digestive system. A group of bourgeois sit around a table on toilets, most of them with their trousers and/or underwear pulled down to their mid-thighs, and have frank conversations about excretion. When a young girl tells her mother she's hungry, her mother tells her not to be so indiscreet in front of the guests. Eventually, one of the guests asks the hosts for directions to the dining room, where he finds a chair and a cupboard in the wall with a cooked dinner, which he begins eating; another guest knocks on the door and is told the room is occupied.

Mind Screw: Even by Buñuel standards, this film is weird. Napoleonic troops occupying Toledo in 1808 carouse in a church; one of them caresses a statue of a long-dead noblewoman, only to be knocked over the head by the statue of her husband. In revenge, he digs up her body (with apparent necrophilia in mind) and finds her face is still intact. A strange man in a park gives two schoolgirls a set of postcards while their nanny, who was telling them the story from 1808, is distracted; their parents are outraged by the filth displayed on the cards and dismiss the nanny for allowing this to happen. The postcards are revealed to be exterior shots of historic French buildings. The girls' father is unable to sleep thanks to a cockerel, a woman with a watch, a postman carrying a letter, and an emu wandering through his bedroom. His doctor is convinced he dreamt the images, even though he still has the postman's letter. The doctor's nurse goes to visit her sick father and encounters a military tank on a fox hunt, a group of monks who gamble holy relics on a game of poker while smoking and drinking, and a hatter who gets flagellated by a dominatrix while wearing bottomless trousers. The nurse gives a lift to a man who gives a lecture to a classroom of policemen who behave like rowdy schoolchildren, up to and including pinning notes to his back. The lecturer tells an anecdote about a bourgeois family who have functioning toilets around their dining table but insist on going into a private room to eat. Two of the policemen from the class stop a speeding motorist on his way to a doctor's appointment; the man is told he has cancer but is offered a cigarette by his doctor, whom he slaps in reply. He tells his wife there's nothing wrong, but they are interrupted by a phone call to tell them their daughter is missing, even though she's right there in the room with them when they ask her teacher what happened. A policeman asks if he can take the girl along so he knows what to look for while searching. While the search is going on, one of the policemen gets a shoeshine from a man who goes to the top of the Tour Montparnasse with a sniper's rifle and randomly fires on the people below. He is arrested, tried, and convicted, but is treated like a celebrity throughout, with "fans" asking him for his autograph as he leaves the court. The Prefect of Police who returns the "missing" girl goes to a bar and gets a phone call from his dead sister; he goes to her mausoleum and finds a phone next to her sarcophagus, whereupon he is arrested for desecrating her grave. The arresting officers refuse to believe he is the Prefect of Police, and take him to meet the "real" Prefect - whom the "fake" Prefect already knows. They finish the film by jointly directing crowd control of an off-screen riot as the camera focuses on animals in a zoo.

Fan Disservice: Ever wanted to see Michael Lonsdale wearing trousers with the seat cut out and no underwear, getting his bare backside whipped by a dominatrix? Neither do the other characters at his hotel, who quickly make their excuses to leave once the cat-o'-nine-tails comes out.
