It had been decriminalised in 1735 and prosecutions moved into the vagrancy act (i.e. if you claimed you could do magic, you were a con artist). In Salazar's flashbacks, set in 1708, the Silent Mary' can be seen sporting the coat of arms of the Spanish Armada, only that for some reason it lacks the crown and golden rim and instead shows, of all things, the two-handed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire. This coat effectively conflates arms from two periods separarated by almost two centuries: Spain only used the eagle during Charles V's 1516-1556 reign, while the naval coat of arms was introduced in 1700 by Philip V. In fact, considering those two belonged to different and opposed royal houses, it would mean Salazar at his time was effectively sporting arms of an enemy nation. Salazar and his crew also wear in black and white, instead of the blue, red and white used in the Spanish Armada's uniforms at the time.

In the first movie especially, but also somewhat in the sequels, he was still a solid captain capable of serious moments amidst Indy Ploy while being The Ditz and loving his drink. By this film, he is a full-on The Alcoholic, doesn't have the respect from his crew, gets thrown around as Pinball Protagonist, forgets words and only escapes danger through contrived luck. The only real excuse is a long bout of Alcohol-Induced Stupidity and Shansa mentioning that Barbossa had asked her to jinx his enemies, Jack included, when they had met sometime after On Stranger Tides.

Shansa the sea witch is one for Tia Dalma. Mullroy and Murtogg are back again, now serving under Barbossa. They basically serve the same role that Pintel and Ragetti used to provide. Bollard and Cremble are so similar to Pintel and Ragetti (both personality-wise and appearance-wise) that most stories just confuse them for the famous duo.
