Bud's oilman father, Ace (Pat Hingle), is the wealthiest man in town, while Deanie's parents are shopkeepers. The real conflict between the two is not their class differences, however, but their intense desire to have sex with each other, and the social guidelines in 1920s small-town America that will not permit them to consummate their relationship. Bud and Deanie's sexual frustration subsequently impacts their lives along with the lives of several people around them.Splendor in the Grass marked Wood's arrival as a serious adult actress after starting out as a child performer and transitioning to "teenager" roles in films like Rebel Without a Cause; her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. (William Inge was also nominated, and won, for his original screenplay.) This film is also notable as the screen debut of Warren Beatty, who would become one of the big cinema heartthrobs of the next couple decades.Remade in 1981 as a Made-for-TV Movie starring Melissa Gilbert as Deanie, Cyril O'Reilly as Bud, Ned Beatty as Ace, Eva Marie Saint as Mrs. Loomis, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Ginny.
