Almost Kiss: Roland and Vera's first date is heavily guarded by Vera's chaperone, her aunt Belle. They steal away from her and nearly kiss, before Belle finds them and reproves them for their behaviour. (They're only amused in response.)

Ambiguously Gay: Edward. Cast interviews confirm that the film goes with the interpretation that Edward was gay, which is a common theory among historians. However, the film itself plays it in a very understated way, with Edward being a Straight Gay man whose relationship with another soldier is strongly implied yet ultimately kept implicit. It's also never touched upon why he wanted to be a soldier so badly in the first place; many historians theorise that the real Edward Brittain wanted to enlist because of his sexuality.
