The film is loosely based on true events surrounding the torture and murder of Sylvia Likens by Gertrude Baniszewski during the summer of 1965.The movie starts as a man in the present day remembering the summer of 1958, when he befriends two adolescent sisters, Meg and Susan, whose parents die in a car crash and are forced to live with their Aunt Ruth. She seems like a cool aunt, who lets kids in the neighborhood come over to smoke and drink beer.
