Also invoked at the ending, where Yulaw's apparent penalty is to fight wave after wave of inmates in a penal dimension that seems to be swarming with them. It's implied that any death results in that person's doubles becoming stronger, but given the wide variety of universes, it's highly unlikely for many to die at once, so the incremental changes are barely noticed. And if someone's doubles all die of old age, that person is likely to be too infirm to make much use of the energy.
