The Runaway Guys was a collaborative group of Let's Players on YouTube, comprising of ProtonJon, NintendoCapriSun, and Chuggaaconroy. Chugga was in charge of maintaining the channel, although Jon had made posts and comments for the channel as well. For the first two years, updates usually only occurred every Saturday, but this was changed to Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday following an announcement on February 8, 2013. Videos for Mario Party games (starting with the third) and Fortune Street were also posted daily (each board beginning on Saturday and continuing every day until its end).Their first Let's Play premiered on February 5, 2011. The three of them were the only ones participating, but many of their later videos have featured additional players.Along with their official long-running LPs, they have done one-shot filler LPs (labeled "The Runaway Gaiden"), tournaments featuring multitudes of guest players, and side collab projects that they gradually updated and used as filler between regular projects. On occasion at various conventions, the Runaway Guys had their own panel, called Thrown Controllers, essentially a game show inspired by Nick Arcade. In its debut at PAX East 2012, two teams took turns answering questions and playing video game challenges, either against each other, solo, or against members of the audience. At PAX Prime 2012, they retooled the game (mostly due to the previous iteration being plagued by technical problems and a sluggish pace) into a single-person quiz show with challenges, similar to the initial concept except for one person at a time, and this is how it had been done since. Many prizes were awarded at these panels, ranging from character pins from Fangamer to (as a grand prize) an actual video game console, such as a Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, or Nintendo Switch. There also existed an open-source edition of Thrown Controllers for others to make their own version of the game show, hosted here.In 2018, they started the now-annual charity marathon, The Runaway Guys Colosseum, raising money for Direct Relief and featuring many of their friends and fellow LPers. And a lamp. The lamp is important. They have a Shout-Out page here, a Character Sheet here, an Epic Fail page here, and a Drinking Game here.As of February 2024, the group is now on indefinite hiatus due to controversies surrounding Chuggaaconroy that made it impossible to move forward with him involved in any capacity; however, Jon has confirmed that Thrown Controllers and Colosseum will continue under different branding.

Genre Savvy | |
The Runaway Guys (Lets Play) / int_1777688d | comment |
Genre Savvy: They showed impressive amounts of genre savviness in their later Mario Party playthroughs. In one board in Mario Party 3, Tim had the means to reach the next star, but since he had the star lead and the star was in a difficult to reach spot, he refrained from using the magic lamp and prevented the rest from getting the next stars. He won the board. However, this trope was taken up to eleven in Mario Party 4, where they frequently invoked Tempting Fate and called each other out when it worked.

The Cameo: Four special guests appear in the Colosseum Direct. D.C. Douglas makes a guest appearance in a bumper for Day 2 of the event, portraying himself as Albert Wesker. He would go on to team with Jon in a series of Resident Evil 5 streams. Similarly, well-known video game composer Grant Kirkhope drops a quick shout out to FamilyJules and the TRG crew. Lindsay Jones (from RWBY) joins the Animal Crossing: New Horizons segment while the group is visiting Jules's island. Following the New Horizons segment, VoiceoverPete makes a surprise appearance encouraging viewers to continue donating.

Failed a Spot Check: A distressingly common problem for Chugga, who is prone to inobservance and impatience, causing him to miss details that make it significantly easier to progress had he paid attention. Also applies to Tim and Jon every so often (usually in Mario Party) but not quite to the same extent.

Aborted Arc | |
The Runaway Guys (Lets Play) / int_23698fa8 | comment |
Aborted Arc: During Colosseum 2020, there were two major story arcs being told. One involved a twist that Lord Dona'tor is the result of Tom Fawkes' psychoactive imagination, and the other being Stephen revealing that the Lamp was Evil All Along. While the latter carried over into Colosseum 2021's bumpers, with the Lamp nearly killing Stephen, the former was dropped entirely, with Lord Dona'tor returning to his status as just a mysterious entity.

Companion Cube: During Colosseum, the lamp is treated as being just as much a part of the group as anyone else, and even gets its own section of the sitcom opening parody, with said section being a little more... ominous than the rest of the video. Massive Multiplayer Crossover: The various invitational tournaments (streamed on Jon's Twitch channel) feature a barrage of guest players from JonTron to Smooth McGroove. The Runaway Guys Colosseum, a yearly charity livestream that's also hosted on Jon's Twitch channel. Originally launched in 2018, this weekend long event features the likes of Masae Anela, Lucahjin, StephenPlays (along with his wife Mal, AKA MalMakes), JoshJepson, AttackingTucans, Marriland, and Tom Fawkes, along with musicals guests like Adrisaurus, FamilyJules, and ToxicxEternity. The stream relies mainly on video game challenges, musical performances, and other miscellaneous activities to raise money for the medical relief charity, Direct Relief. Lasting about 3-4 days a year and featuring an impressive cast of participants, Colosseum is, to date, the largest collaborative event ever hosted by the channel.

Creepy High-Pitched Voice: In their playthrough of Kirbys Return To Dreamland, Chugga gives Magolor a silly, high-pitched voice that the others compare to Elmo. When Magolor turns out to be Evil All Along and goes One-Winged Angel, Chugga shouts Magolor's lines, making the "Elmo" voice sound downright demonic. The other players are initially freaked out before eventually laughing it off.

Once an Episode: Whenever they play mainline co-op Mario games, Emile usually sings a TRG-ified parody of an old cartoon. New Super Mario Bros. Wii started the trend with The Jepsons, New Super Mario Bros. U continued it with The Timstones, their LP of New Super Luigi U gave us Runawayniacs, and so far, Super Mario 3D World capped it off by having Emile and Masae have a duet with Tiny Tim Adventures.

The Runaway Guys (Lets Play) / int_3b113b7 | comment |
Mixed with Character Development. Mario Party had Chugga being calmer and Jon more energetic, leading to them being very similar to one another aside from their ongoing rivalry, and Tim barely talking whatsoever. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Chugga's goofiness was turned up to eleven while Jon embraced his inner Token Evil Teammate, leading to their rivalry turning practically bloodthirsty (and Tim still barely talked). After that, Chugga relented to his more characteristic sense of humour; Jon, while still a troll, only did so when provoked or when it would be perfectly timed rather than practically every second; and Tim, while still the quietest, has become more talkative and even a Deadpan Snarker to rival Jon.

Bootstrapped Theme: In a sense. Every video ends with stats related to the current project and links to solo channels, with music playing over it. They often use music from the game they're playing. But ever since Fortune Street, they just as often use its remix of the ''Super Mario World'' bonus music. Chugga has even jokingly called it their theme song.

Butt-Monkey: Tim. If something bad is going to happen to someone, it's probably going to be him. So much so that the others seem kind of protective of him, and avoid picking on him whilst bickering amongst themselves. What's strange about this is that Tim has, in the past, proven himself MORE than a capable gamer with challenges like the swordless or 3-heart runs of The Legend of Zelda. An excellent example of this is part one of Mystery Land in the Mario Party 2 LP. He actually manages to get lucky enough to have more coins than anyone else... and then, due to A Day At The Races and Chance Time, he goes from over 80 coins to one. In the very last Mario Party video, he finished the Pot o' Skills with 2 coins. The Pot o' Skills has no stars and is determined completely by coins. All three have had their moments such as Jon having horrible luck in Mario Party and Chugga repeatedly dying in Sonic Adventure and Super Mario Bros. 3.

Chugga hates the name Steve, due to Creator Backlash. Also, never bring up Paper Mario: Sticker Star in front of him, or else he will go on a vicious tirade about it being a terrible game. In fact, the most legitimate praise he's ever given the game comes from their Pikmin series, where he complements the game for working properly.

Comedic Sociopathy: The Guys have acknowledged at least once that a video's view count is roughly inversely proportional to how much fun they actually had playing the game, which points to their audience showing more favoritism to projects which involve them being assholes to each other. Specifically, they used Rayman Legends as an example, since they all agree that they liked the project and had a lot of fun playing it together, but it's one of their least watched series.

Early-Installment Weirdness
The Runaway Guys (Lets Play) / int_4f4372e9 | comment |
Early-Installment Weirdness: Mixed with Character Development. In their first few Let's Plays, they all called each other by their channel names, but eventually became close enough friends that they're on a first name basis (with Tim still calling Emile Chugga on occasion); hearing the change can be pretty drastic if you binge their videos. See First-Name Basis below.

Alternative Character Interpretation: invoked Done deliberately. The guys like to play certain characters to be very different than their canon personalities. Big the Cat is turned into a Psychopathic Manchild who hits people with his fishing rod at the slightest provocation. Jon plays Captain Olimar as some sort of mix between Captain Falcon and Zapp Brannigan. During Fortune Street, Stephen interprets Luigi as the type of character who Really Gets Around, making him into a deadbeat dad who is trying to raise money to pay for child support for his several children. Brentilda is a Jerkass who bullies Gruntilda, who in turn is Not Evil, Just Misunderstood.

Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Confused as to who's who? Chugga is red, Jon is blue, and Tim is green (they often refer to this color arrangement as their "TRG Colors"). Save for Wii Party, where, due to player order, this gets messed up (Chugga is blue, Jon is green, and Tim is red), but since they're using their own Miis it's still simple to tell who is who. And while Chugga is most often player 1, sometimes it will be Tim because the player color is green, in the case of Luigi or Link. Jon got Player 1 in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror because that game doesn't have a blue player but does have a red. Guest stars are often yellow, sometimes purple. This is emphasized further in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, in which Josh's name is highlighted in black rather than the other Guys' white. Colors go all over the spectrum for tournaments, unique to each participant.

The Runaway Guys (Lets Play) / int_74b5724e | comment |
We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties: Immediately after Jon calls himself a professional mine cart driver in Mario Party, a portion of commentary was removed due to personal reasons. A small section of commentary in Episode 3 of New Super Mario Bros. is missing. During this segment, an explanation is displayed on the video: they discussed some of their future projects, and didn't want to spoil anyone. Jon is thanked/blamed for this. note Due to them mentioning their characters being "Small, big, small, big," it can be assumed they were discussing LittleBigPlanet, a project that hadn't been revealed at the time. A portion of the commentary was excised from Episode 25 of New Super Mario Bros. U. Jon clarified in a comment on the video that the removed audio consisted of Emile and Josh referring to someone they hated by their full name, due to mistakenly thinking a remark from Jon was targeted at that person. On part 4 of Dokapon Kingdom Battle Royale, a part of commentary was cut out and it said on the screen, "No need to worry about what was said here". No one knows what it said, but it was probably something offensive, given Jon's reaction. Referenced in Part 21 of Rayman Legends as part of a reference to Freakazoid!.

Waluigi, whose popularity in Fortune Street made Jon choose him for Mario Party 3. Daisy went from an AI character to Chugga's Mario Party character after Donkey Kong was turned into a NPC for Mario Party 5. Wii Party was originally going to be a side project, but got turned into Main Collab #6 after technical difficulties with original Collab #6, which became Collab #7. Precision F-Strike: When 3 adults play a multiplayer game where you can screw with your friends' sanity for the sake of your own laughter, this was bound to happen. At the most, they usually resort to "Damn it!" But even Tim squeezes an actual F-Strike when he loses an intense game of Hot Rope Jump in Mario Party 2. He immediately apologizes for it. The Mario Party 6 series was actually censored for the most part; however, when Emile reveals that Jon is about to play a luck-based Duel mini-game against Boo, Jon's reaction ("Aw, for fuck's sake!") is left uncensored.

Berserk Button: Chugga hates the name Steve, due to Creator Backlash. Also, never bring up Paper Mario: Sticker Star in front of him, or else he will go on a vicious tirade about it being a terrible game. In fact, the most legitimate praise he's ever given the game comes from their Pikmin series, where he complements the game for working properly. Jon hates almost all of his lines from the past (especially "MOVE FASTER POKEY!"), hates it when people take his relationship with Chugga the wrong way, and hates almost all of Chugga's puns.

Running Gag: Many. Chugga's bad puns, Jon being an asshole, Press L to P (In The Bathroom!). A YouTuber took the first half of the last one as their name; that user is responsible for the Top 10 videos. There are also some longer-range ones that only show up occasionally, such as Jon claiming a character is "dead" and acting shocked. Chugga's Popcultural Osmosis Failure tendencies (especially concerning how few movies he's seen) tend to crop up regularly in every LP. The second video of every Mario LP features Chugga parodying the opening of a famous cartoon. "Why did I have that installed?" shows up in some capacity during the Mario LPs, around the final boss fight. Chugga even comments on it during the credits of 3D World. They also have a tendency to bring up the fact that LPs are recorded months in advance due to some people not realising it. Every Mario Party has at least one minigame the Guys don't like which ends up getting played nearly every board. Chugga insisting that going last is a good thing in many of their Mario Party videos, usually when he's the one going last. Whenever the trio finishes a particularly lengthy or difficult section of a video game, Chugga will attempt to troll the other guys by pretending that they never started recording. Pretty much every project where Chugga plays an old single-player game involves either "X wasn't cool when I was a kid" or "I got stuck on X and I gave up".
