When Hauberin gets wounded in such a way, the entire kingdom assumes he will die; it takes an outsider to point out that he hasn't died as quickly as they expected but if they continue assuming his death then they're going to ensure it. Turns out that being a halfling instead of a full-blooded elf makes the effect less lethal (though they still need to bring the fever down). Handy, that. Many other instances of non-human ways of thinking are pointed out throughout the book. This includes the ability to accept new, worldview-changing information at the drop of a dime, rather than arguing or being angry about it; that's important, near the end. | |
