It's hardly abusive, but it's severely regimented. The Gilbreths also believe (to a lesser degree) in Corporal Punishment. Mother, the psychologist, is very reluctant on the subject and gives so many restrictions on spankings ("Not on the base of the spine!") that Dad eventually gives up and resorts to other means to control his brood.
