Devil's Cape is a novel by Rob Rogers set in a world of superheroes and supervillains. Although early in the story the narrative alternates between significant past and present events, the main storyline is set in the modern-day town of Devil's Cape, Louisiana, a former pirate town that attracts tourism mainly through its famous crimes, and the fact that it was home to the first named supervillain, notorious pirate St. Diable, and his nemesis Lady Danger.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })A group of carnies are exposed to the moment of death of a famous superhero, and as a result gain superpowers based on their own abilities. Hector was killed by Scion. His uncle Costas put his father in danger by bringing Zhdanov to his restaurant, so Julian helps the heroes who recaptured her bring down the Cirque d'Obscurite, though only Jason sees him do it. Costas is a criminal through and through, with ties to police corruption, murder and many other crimes, but he dearly loves his family. He wouldn't allow any of his subordinates to do business at his brother's restaurant, and is shown to greatly regret endangering him when dealing with Zhdanov. He also loves his nephews. When the Robber Baron asks Costas if he would kill his wife if it meant living forever, he thinks about it and ultimately concludes that he would not. Played with for St. Diable. He did love Lady Danger just not as much as himself, as he killed her as part of an unspecified ritual allowing him to live forever by killing the woman he loves. | |
