Secret Test: Theodore R Cogswell's "The Wall Around The World": The people inside The Wall are learning how to cast magic, honing their minds for generations. However, there's occasionally someone who is willing to ignore magic and builds a machine instead to help them over the wall. If they do that, the Black Man takes them away to learn about the Outside, with the high-tech machines humans have made.

Hyperspace Is a Scary Place: James Blish's "Common Time": A person travelling in "over-drive" first experiences his mind (and therefore his perception of time) operating thousands of times faster than his body, and later experiences his body operating vastly faster than his mind - both potentially fatal conditions. (Several earlier expeditions failed to return). It then gets weirder, and the whole thing is possibly kinky.

Tomato in the Mirror: Philip K. Dick's "Impostor": There's a war between Earth and aliens from Alpha Centauri. One man is accused of being a robot, planted by the enemy, with a bomb inside, set to explode when a trigger is activated. The man escapes and tries to find the robot, to attempt to prove he is actually human. He isn't. And the bomb inside him explodes right after discovering the truth, laying waste to good part of the Earth.

Vichy Earth: William Tenn's "The Liberation Of Earth": The narrator describes how an alien race "liberated" Earth, and took over as a central government. Then another alien race liberates Earth from the first aliens, and become the new overlords. Then the first alien race re-liberates Earth, and so on. In the end the whole thing was just a minor skirmish in an on-going galactic war, the aliens take their battle elsewhere and Earth has been reduced to a lop-sided irradiated wasteland.

You Wake Up in a Room: Fredric Brown's "Hall Of Mirrors": A 25-year-old man suddenly finds himself fifty years in the future, in a locked room, with a letter addressed to him on the desk. Reading it, he learns that he is actually 75 years old, but has just de-aged himself, which erased his memory of the last fifty years. The letter is from his older self, and it includes the horrifying explanation of why he has done this. And may have to do it again, fifty years from now.

From Bad to Worse: William Tenn's "The Liberation Of Earth": Two warring groups of aliens keep trading control of the eponymous planet back and forth, causing more and more damage in the process. When the two species' battle finally shifts to another solar system, they leave behind a handful of ragged human survivors scrabbling on a pear-shaped, atmosphere-depleted, burnt-out husk.

Gay Aesop: Theodore Sturgeon's "The World Well Lost": This controversial 1953 short story is about a pair of fugitive alien lovers ("loverbirds") from the planet Dirbanu. The main characters later learn that both of the aliens are male, and that this was the exact reason for their exile. In a second, more poignant twist, it's heavily implied, if not outright stated, that the narrator has similar feelings for his partner.

Bizarre Sexual Dimorphism: Theodore Sturgeon's "The World Well Lost": This story centers on a pair of fugitive "loverbirds" from the planet Dirbanu, which has shunned contact with Earth. The loverbirds are initially assumed to be a male and female, but they manage to explain, via some illustrations, that male and female Dirbanu are vastly different in appearance. In fact, the main reason why the Dirbanu dislike humans is due to homophobia, because they perceive all human relationships as being homosexual.
