On one hand, spectacularly horrible things keep happening to them, but on the other, they also have some amazingly lucky things happen, such as winning ten thousand pounds on a scratch card, successfully guilt-tripping the emergency housing staff into giving them an apartment and Nikki getting a job on a pure fluke by going into a particular pub to buy cigarettes. One of the main themes of the book is arguably that sometimes in life, really bad or really good things can happen and you just have to make the best of it. | |
