Hiding Your Heritage | |
Nightjohn / int_55d2dd16 | comment |
Hiding Your Heritage: Miss Laura is biracial (specifically, what was called an “octoroon” at the time – someone with one Black great-grandparent). She hides this, in part by wearing headscarves to hide her curly hair, and passes for completely white. After learning this, Sarny regards her as Black. White society would as well, if they knew, and treat her cruelly, so Sarny doesn't reveal the secret to anyone.

Agonizing Stomach Wound: Sarny mentions how soldiers during the American Civil War left soldiers (many only teenagers) to die if they were wounded in the stomach. It often took a day or more for the soldiers to die.

Dumb Struck: Sarny finds a traumatized little boy whose family was murdered after the war. The boy won't speak or even mention his name, so Sarny nicknames him "Tyler Two".
