 The Paola Santiago series is a middle grade Urban Fantasy series by Tehlor Kay Mejia based on Mexican folklore.Paola "Pao" Santiago is a young Mexican-American girl living in Silver Springs, Arizona. Her mother is very superstitious, believing that ghosts like La Llorona haunt the Gila, which Silver Springs is located near to, but Pao hates that, feeling embarrassed that her mother believes such unscientific things.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Pao used to have horrible nightmares of La Llorona, but as she grows up, she throws herself into science, becoming fascinated with algae and astronomy, to try and replace the baseless fears with knowledge. One day, when she arranges for them to meet up at the Gila (unbeknownst to her mother), she arrives to find only Dante — Emma's gone missing.The strange dreams Pao used to have begin coming back, with a darker twist, and a new person appearing who warns her that Emma might die if she doesn't act quick enough. Dante's grandmother seems to know more than it seems, and she gives Pao and Dante objects to help them in their quest to save Emma and urges them to leave before it's too late.The superstitions Pao's derided her whole life are real, and they want to kill her. To make matters worse, she's begun to develop feelings for Dante even as their relationship grows more strained — oh, and also, that girl who drowned in the river?
