Renegades is a trilogy of superhero novels by Marissa Meyer, composed of Renegades, Archenemies and Supernova.Once, prodigies were feared and despised. Children born with unusual powers were shunned at best, and killed at worst... Until Ace Anarchy came. The most powerful prodigy of all time, he overthrew the government and plunged Gatlon City into chaos of a superpowered gang war. But as people cowered in their homes, fearful and powerless, hope arrived in form of the Renegades - the first superheroes. Now, ten years later, Ace Anarchy lays dead, and the Renegades rule over the city, struggling to rebuild society and government. There are parades in their honour, public trials to join them, and tourists travelling to the city just to see them. But not everyone is a fan. Far beneath Gatlon, Ace's remaining Anarchists, among them his niece Nova, strive to keep his vision of the world alive. And with the upcoming trials, Nova - known to the world as the elusive villain Nightmare - might just get her wish... and, just perhaps, regret it.

Ace Anarchy fought against the opression of prodigies by waging a one-man war against civilization by destroying governements and bringing society to its knees. Ace later drops his concerns about protecting prodigy rights and instead plans on tearing society down again so he can rule over.

Bittersweet Ending: Ace Anarchy is finally put down properly and Max uses the helmet and Nova's bracelet to save Gatlon City. However since both amplify his powers he ends up absorbing the powers of every prodigy in the world. Releasing them creates a supernova that not only returns the prodigies powers, even the ones that were neutralized, but everyone in the world has powers now. The act however leaves Max powerless, but it also means he's not cut off from the world anymore. However, the epilogue implies that any peace claimed is only temporary. Not all powers are created equal, a hierarchy will eventually rise up, and villains won't just go away. And Magpie is revealed to be Evie Artino, but it's likely she and Nova will never realize who they are to eachother.

The Peter Principle: The Council is composed of the original five Renegades, as their victory over Gatlon's various gangs made them the rulers of the city. Though they're trying their best, it's pretty obvious, at least to people willing to look at them critically, that a group of friends who formed a superhero team in their basement is not very well suited to administering a state - the economy is still in shambles, many civil projects are started and abandoned before they're done, and a lot of people still have to scavenge for a living.

Would Hurt a Child: The killer from the prologue has no trouble murdering infant Evie, and would've done the same to six-year-old Nova if she didn't knock him out. As it turns out, Ace was the one hired the gunman and fed Nova the story about his brother dealing with the Roaches. Ace was perfectly willing to have both of his nieces killed, just to get revenge on their father, and only spared Nova because he saw she could be useful. The Detonator has no problem setting a library full of schoolchildren on fire. Ace Anarchy, it turns out, isn't much of a standout either, as during the Battle of Gatlon, he apparently did his best to murder then-infant Max. Max's biological parents wanted to throw him off the rooftop once they realized what his power was.

Although The Anarchists are villains and desire revenge on The Renegades for causing their downfall, most of them still have a few likable qualities. The exception is Ingrid Thompson AKA Detonator. At first coming across as a temperamental yet nevertheless loyal member of The Anarchists, her true personality as a cold-hearted sociopath who puts Revenge Before Reason begins to shine through. She goes behind her teammates' backs in an attempt to kill Adrian to hurt Captain Chromium, accuses Nova of going soft rather than take any responsibility for her plan going badly, betrays and attempts to kill Nova for her supposed weakness, and sadistically attempts to blow up all of Cosmopolis Amusement Park as a final act of spite against The Renegade Council. No one is upset when Nova shoots her in the head as a result.

The Reveal: Several in Supernova. Everything Ace told Nova about her family's death was a lie. David Artino built the helmet that amplified Ace's power. Feeling responsible for his actions, he went to the Council and revealed the secret behind Ace's power. Ace hired the gunman himself for his brother's betrayal. He likely would have killed Nova if she wasn't a prodigy. The Renegades were there that night. Lady Indomitable was watching the Artino's apartment and would have been the first to respond. But the night of the Artino murders was the same night she died. Phobia was responsible for her death. Her own fear scared her enough that she forgot she could fly, if only for a moment. It was likly orchestrated by Ace. Phobia was created from Adrian's drawings. He lived so long, compared to his other creations that die anywere between a few hours to a few days, due to young Adrian embuing him with everything he's ever feared. He's essentially a living embodiment of Adrian's fears. Evie survived the gunshot. And she's a prodigy. Magpie. But neither she nor Nova are aware of this.

Oscar and Ruby come within moments of kissing near the end of Archenemies, but Adrian cuts them off because there's more important things that need attention. Namely, capturing Ace Anarchy.

Emergency Impersonation: After Nova is seemingly outed as Nightmare and imprisoned, the villain makes a public appearance, claiming to have framed Nova in retaliation for Ingrid's death and to make the Renegades look bad. She's actually Narcissa, having allied with the Anarchists, and everyone is convinced Nova is innocent, since all the evidence really is circumstantial. For her part, Nova is thankful, but also feels slightly insulted that no one could tell the difference between them.

Nova uses this uncle as an excuse so she doesn't have to stay with the team longer than necessary. Towards the end of Renegades, Adrian suspects her uncle is sick. Sure enough, the last page reveals that Ace Anarchy is still alive and in poor health. In the prologue Nova's father is extremely hesitant to rely on his brother for help. Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Some prodigies gain their abilities this way, while others are born with it. Ruby's power manifested after she swallowed a bunch of jewels to keep them away from looters, and was almost killed for it. Oscar's smoke manipulation triggered after he died from inhaling smoke in a house fire. Nova is an interesting case in that she could induce Forced Sleep since she was a child, but only became The Sleepless in response to her family's death. Winston Pratt, the Puppeteer’s powers manifested as a child a few weeks after a family friend molested him. After his neutralization and a bit of therapy, he’s notably much happier. In Supernova it's theorized that everyone has the potential for the powers of a prodigy. But for those who weren't inherently born with these powers, they manifest after the individual faced great trauma. Which goes a long way to explain why no one else in Ruby's family has any powers, why Oscar's manifested after he was dead and why their powers relate to said trauma.

The Friend Nobody Likes: None of the other Anarchists really like Winston/The Puppeteer because his powers creep them out and he tends to be a loose cannon. When he is captured, none try to rescue him and only Nova feels any guilt over it. He was allowed to live with them because he was one of the original gang and they needed his powers in case an open war with the Renegades started up again. When Indigo/The Detonator is killed the Anarchists are not really heartbroken and it becomes clear that none of them really liked her but worked with her because she was so powerful. Frostbite and her team fill this role for the Renegades. They are too powerful to kick out of the Renegades without a good reason and they are good in hiding just how corrupt they really are.

Second Super-Identity: Both of the main protagonists take up alternate identities to suit their needs, which forms a key part of the series. Nova, normally the villainous Nightmare, becomes the heroic Insomnia to spy on the Renegades, and has to rely on her Fights Like a Normal skills to compensate for supposedly only having a non-combat power. Adrien, normally the heroic Sketch, turns into the vigilante Sentinel to investigate his mother’s murder, and uses his art power and tattoos to give himself Combo Platter Powers. Both of them use face-concealing masks in their non-Renegade identities to keep up the charade.

Hypocrite: Early on in Supernova Frostbite calls out the Renegades Council on their ineptitude during the books so far. There was no convincing proof that Nightmare was even dead, then she got a hold of Agent N and Ace Anarchy was really alive the whole time. This causes her to call the Council out on using the Renegades as pawns. However, Frostbite contently forgets how she abused her position and was a little too eager to use Agent N herself. So she ends up coming across as someone looking to blame someone for the loss of her powers and wanting to get out of dodge before Max could reveal that Frostbite was the one who critically injured him. Which, ironically enough, directly leads to her losing her powers.

Holding Out for a Hero: This is Nova's main problem with the Renegades: people are less willing to take matters into their own hands because everyone assumes that the Renegades will take care of all the problems. As a result, there is no police force (because who would want to be a cop with prodigies patrolling the streets?), Gatlon's economy is in shambles (because their only export is superheroes), and the city has turned into an autocracy, because no-one cares about representation when Renegades protect everyone.

Hate Sink: Frostbite and her group are generally the worst Smug Supers of the entire Renegades, with Frostbite herself being willing to torture suspected villains so that they'd lash out and give her the excuse to arrest them. Even their fellow Renegades despise them - early on, Nova's claim to fame among them is that she beat up Gargoyle, Frostbite's number two, much to everyone's joy.

Dirty Cop: While most Renegades really are good people, it soon becomes clear that there are some bad apples among the bunch, and there is no system in place to prevent abuses of power. This gets worse when Agent N is introduced. Bomb-Throwing Anarchists: Played with. On one hand, Ace Anarchy and his gang plunged the country - and, the implication is, the world - into chaos as he dismantled government and gave all prodigies free reign, leading to the society collapsing. On the other hand, Nova says that this was never his intention, and he simply wanted to free the prodigies from oppression. However, the reveal of Ace's god complex and the extent of his manipulation of Nova call those claims into question.

Mind over Matter: Both Ace Anarchy and Max have telekinesis, the latter thanks to absorbing Ace's power. Ace was apparently extremely powerful, as stories tell of him uprooting entire buildings at the start of his revolution. Archenemies clarifies that the sheer strength of Ace's powers are actually partially due to the power-amplifying helmet made for him by Nova's father, but even without it, he's still capable of precisely manipulating dozens of objects and throwing Adrian-in-Sentinel-armor around like a ragdoll.
