This apparently happened with Jacob and his girlfriend, Noelle, at one point. They broke up after the latter caught him cheating on her with Emma, but eventually get back together like nothing happened. One of the final tipping points for Emma occurred when Dylan and Sara hooked up at a party behind her back.

At the start of the novel, Sara is attending summer school, making up for the classes she missed during her junior year as a result of the lawsuit, but is ostracized and ignored by her peers for what she did.
