Non-vampires bitten have their DNA rewired to become addicted to the "rush" of a bite and highly vulnerable to vampire Mind Control pheromones. Humans but not other races infected with enough of the virus become low-blood vampire or "ghouls". The worst aspect of the virus is that when a living vampire dies, the virus will cause them to rise as a soulless undead version of themselves. Kisten may have avoided this fate. Word of God hasn't decided yet. Another virus appears in the form of a demonic focus that can transform a human into a werewolf. David accidentally transforms a number of his girlfriends this way.

However, she's a woman in the 60's, not to mention an elf; she knows she has no career anymore to speak of because of the virus, and to top it off, the elf who ruined her impregnated her during their one night stand, which means they have to get married, and she will basically be subordinate to him.

Not to mention the faking his own death as an escape and then giving Rachel the focus. Almost everyone that tap dances over the line ends up this. Trent's father, also named Trent, kicks off the Turn by twisting a virus and the Angel tomato together, simply to ruin another elf's work. He doesn't end up dead, or even ruined; instead, he's on the way to becoming rich by creating Brimstone, he's managed to impregnate his rival and thus save his bloodline, and he has Piscary willing to fund a secret genetics lab. Trent himself, despite taking after his father in some ways, ends up married to Rachel at the end. Al, despite, well, everything he's done, ends up free on the other other side of the lines, and a big shot in Hollywood. The only ones to really pay for anything are Piscary, Lee, and Nick.
