The series follows Mia as she slowly adjusts to becoming a Princess and comes to terms with the idea of being a ruler.In 2001, the first book was adapted into a movie starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews. It was followed by a sequel in 2004, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Both movies have a large number of changes from the novels, with the second not resembling any plot points from any of the books with the exception of Mia's mother marrying her teacher and having a baby with him.In 2015, Meg released two spinoffs: Royal Wedding, which is an adult novel that follows Mia as a 25-year old, and From the Notebooks of a Middle School Princess, which follows Mia's recently revealed half-sister.As of 2020, Meg is updating her online blog to show how Genovia is handling the pandemic. Mia has to work in tandem with the prime minister to protect the kingdom. Even if it ruins her friendship with J.P. — it doesn't because J.P. had already developed a crush on her — she doesn't want to ruin Lilly's hard work, and returns them to the locker. The point becomes moot when at lunchtime Principal Gupta busts Lilly for distributing NC-17 stories, and confiscates all the copies. Michael failed this one: he slept with one of his classmates, Judith Gershner, who already had a boyfriend, for some reason. And didn't tell Mia until she was about to initiate their first time, after he had been pressuring her for a year and a half to sleep with him. He could have contracted an STD or such, and Mia already feels insecure about not measuring up as a girlfriend. As Michael admits later, he should have told her upfront but was being a Hypocrite and not respecting Mia's health concerns. Lilly also fails this in junior year: J.P. breaks up with her and tells her that it's because he's going after her best friend, the newly single Mia. Rather than tell Mia upfront, Lilly gets angry on seeing Mia accidentally kiss J.P. for being nice to her, and uninvites her from her presidential election victory party. Then she creates a hate site all about humiliating Mia, despite the fact that her loudly admitting to it in the school cafeteria could have led to her getting suspended or expelled if Mia or her father wanted to pursue that point. Much later on, Lilly is ashamed when Michael calls her out for what she did, and realizes that she messed up badly. She then tries to make amends by creating a beautiful campaign video for Philippe without telling Mia what it is, and assigning Mia to interview her brother for his Cardio-Arm. It's revealed Boris has been spying on Mia for Michael after the two break up; while Michael wasn't ready to get back together with Mia, he trusted Boris to be a good friend to her. Boris comforts Mia after Lilly yells at her in the cafeteria, and willingly goes into the supply closet to play her favorite music. Her dad tells her to suck it up; she's his daughter, and the princess life comes with that. While Lilly tries to be nice, her actions end up making Mia feel worse over the books, and that's not even going into The Reveal that J.P. is as creepy as Mia initially thought he was. Lana is the exception, in that Mia realizes that she's not a bad person, just shallow and Innocently Insensitive. Even if someone cares about you as a friend, their toxic influence will hurt you. Lilly is a terrible friend to Mia at times, yelling at her for things that weren't her fault like Grandmere surprising Mia with a makeover courtesy of Paolo. While she has a few nice moments, like calling out Josh Richter for not knowing Mia is vegetarian, she is a jerk. It culminates to. breaking point where Lilly's hate site of Mia causes the latter to develop bad depression, so bad that she spends days in bed and refuses to go to school or even shower. Even if two people love each other and seem perfect, they sometimes need to break up to mature and improve their character. Lana becomes a much better person when she and Josh break up for real, in part because she realized that she and Mia were being ridiculous in pining after him and that Josh wasn't worth it. In book ten, when Mia and Michael finally talk about their breakup, they admit that they both messed up. Michael actually says that Mia had every right to be angry with him because he withheld rather important information about his sexual history. Mia tries to insist that she was being immature, but Michael says that she wasn't wrong to call him out for not mentioning that he had helped Judith Gershner cheat on her boyfriend.

However, since Mia is the one writing it, she doesn't understand how silly this comes across as. In fact this is one of the main sources of humor in the series.

Boris is established as being an incessant violin player, which is why the other kids in G&T make him practice in the closet against his wishes. In Book 9, when he comforts a sobbing Mia, he willingly goes into the closet and plays one of her favorite tunes.
