The time span of a year and a day has many situations — legal and magical — where it is significant. For one thing, it sounds impressive, being more sonorous than merely a year. For another, it's been used in Real Life. For a third, it makes it clear that the time is precise; "a year" is sometimes used to mean approximately a year, but a year and a day makes it clear that the exact time is indicated. Earthdawn Nearly all uses of Blood Magic last for a year and a day. If someone suffers from Depatterning damage to their True Pattern due to Blood Magic use, in order to heal the damage, they must refrain from any Blood Magic use for a year and a day. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: The subject of Bilbo's disappearance from his birthday party is the chief topic of conversation in Hobbiton for a year and a day—though this usage of the phrase is clearly figurative, meant to be amusingly over-specific. The Two Towers: Faramir gives Frodo the right to go anywhere in the realm of Gondor (except for the Ranger hideout in Ithilien) for a year and a day. He also grants this right to anyone Frodo formally takes under his protection, such as Gollum. Oddly enough Samwise is not mentioned at all in this—apparently Faramir decided that as Frodo's companion, Sam was already under his protection.
