Take two characters: one sweet, innocent, kind, loving, naive, maybe even virginal, etc. In other words: an angel. The second character is malicious, rude, possibly perverted, ominously charming, sadistic, etc. In other words: a devil. Then you pair them up with each other. The main aspect here lies in the fact that the Devil character can do all sorts of things to torment the Angel character, or vice versa, and in the end the two characters will fall in love despite everything or perhaps because of everything (or not if the pairing is one-sided). Generally, a combination of Mind Game Ship and Opposites Attract, with a dash of Draco in Leather Pants, depending on whether the 'ship is canon or not. In Slash Fic or some yaoi, the Uke is often the angel while the Seme is the devil. We all know the appeal of Mind Game Ship, playing another person's mind like it's a game and what not, and this trope can go hand in hand with that one. It may overlap with Foe Romance Subtext, Foe Yay Shipping, or Dating Catwoman if the two characters are actual enemies in canon. Compare Beast and Beauty. Sometimes a I Have You Now, My Pretty scenario may occur from the devil to the angel. A Fetishized Abuser, Depraved Bisexual, Depraved Homosexual, Psycho Lesbian, or a Yandere may be the devil, and The Ingenue, All-Loving Hero, Plucky Girl, or Nice Guy may be the angel. More Interesting as a Villain can happen as a way to get the angel and devil together. Sometimes for this trope in fanfic a previously tough character may be made into a more sensitive innocent character and vice versa. Sometimes the devil character may try to force another rebellious character to submit. More often than not the devil is male and the angel is female, though the gender-flipped variant is not unheard of. Has nothing to do directly with Angel, though interestingly he could be on either side of the pairing. The Hunchback of Notre Dame: One of the more disturbing examples is Esmeralda/Frollo. Esmeralda is such an All-Loving Heroine that her big song is about asking God to help others, not herself. Frollo on the other is considered one of the most purely evil Disney villains for his murder of Quasimodo's mother, his emotional abuse of Quasi, and his attempts to burn innocent people alive. Fire Emblem: Awakening: Olivia, a sweet, bashful young woman prone to blushing intensely, is commonly paired up with Henry, a sociopathic magician who always looks forward to physically tearing someone to pieces. The best part is, you can make this happen in-game. Like any of Henry's other prospective wives, this is a canon example of the devil character slowly toning down their devilish characteristics because of his interaction with the angel. Whoever Henry gets married to (as well as the couple's child/children) ends up becoming his Morality Chain, and while Henry will never fully get rid of his violent tendencies, he turns out to be both a faithful husband and a good father. While not as popular as Henry and Olivia, Libra and Tharja fall into this too. The former is a benevolent priest while the later is a Dark Magical Girl with an unhealthy obsession with Robin. |

The Little Mermaid: Ariel/Ursula has its share of fans, no doubt partly to do with Ursula's popularity and sex appeal. The infamous criticism of Ariel and Eric's relationshipnote that being Ariel was willing to risk her very soul on forming a relationship with a man she just met also helps. In case you forgot, Ariel is the adventurous and kind-hearted (if a bit foolish and naïve) princess of the sea, while Ursula is the sea witch who rigged their deal to get King Triton to surrender his soul and his ruler-ship of the sea to her. That being said, Ariel/Ursula is only popular in the original film's fandom, as in the stage musical Ursula is both her aunt and the murderer of Ariel's mother. |

Super Smash Bros.: Bayonetta/Pit and Bayonetta/Palutena are both popular pairings, especially thanks to Bayonetta's reveal trailer for the fourth game. On one side, you have a fairly innocent literal angel or the kindhearted Goddess of Light he works for; on the other, you have a seductive, Dark Is Not Evil witch who summons demons on a regular basis.
