This Trope was Rogue Launched. Please make edits on the TLP draft, instead.
A reversal of So Last Season: It's a difficult fight against the Big Bad, and the hero's newer, more powerful powerups and weapons have been destroyed, damaged, or rendered useless. What's a hero to do?
Go back to where the started, using the weapon or Finishing Move they used to use in the beginning of the show. And what do you know? Despite having been reduced to The Worf Barrage twenty-five episodes ago, it works!
Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Definitely connected thematically to Where It All Began and a subtrope of Bookends. Compare Bag of Spilling.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess:
In the final battle, Link must take on Ganondorf in a swordfight, an opponent who easily repel any of Link's sword techniques (well, most of them) unless he drops his guard while attacking or is thrown off-balance after rushing Link head-on. Link's other weapons are all completely useless except for the first one he picks up: the fishing rod!
In order to get to Death Mountain, you need to remember a minigame from the very beginning that allows you to stop a charging enemy in its tracks, though you need a special item to do so. This skill comes in useful again during the second phase of the Final Boss.

Bleach: In the finale of the Thousand Year Blood War arc. Ichigo trains his numerous power (Soul Reaper, Hollow, Vizard, & Quincy power) to be strong enough to fight Ywach that he even gets a few upgrades. However by this point Ywach has gained the power to control time on a person and uses it to render Ichigo's power null by aging it a few years into the future. Orihime manages to repair it and, in the final confrontation, Ywach is hit with an arrow that'll stop his powers for a few minutes. Ichigo goes for the killing blow with his new Zanpakto but Ywach has enough power to null it reducing it back to it's basic form. However it's more than enough for Ichigo to finally finish him with.

Dragonball Super:
The self-damaging power-booster technique Kaio Ken was a major part of Goku's fighting style early in Dragonball Z, but once he gained the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan its volatile energies made the Kaio Ken too dangerous to perform. In Super, however, the energies of his upgraded Super Saiyan Blue transformation are much calmer and easier to handle, allowing him to use Kaio Ken once more.
Whis and Beerus instruct Goku and Vegeta to train in their natural states, not in Super Saiyan or any of its derivatives, for the upcoming Tournament Arc. This is done because the Super Saiyan form is a power multiplier, thus training in that form is not nearly as efficient as training in base form, since Super Saiyan grants a geometric power boost. This is also why Goku Black is so ridiculously powerful. Without knowing how to activate Super Saiyan state in his stolen body, Black trained Goku's normal state to be as strong as possible, making the Super form he eventually learns, "Super Saiyan Roze", even stronger than the highest level state Goku or Vegeta could achieve.

Ayane's High Kick as Ayane's new "pro-wrestling" coach has her "go back to basics" by focusing solely on her kicking ability before he will allow her to compete in a supposed mixed martial arts tournament. Justified, lampshaded, and then subverted in Rats, Bats and Vats and its sequel. The humans and their opponents the magh have slowshields that cause most projectile weapons to be useless, reducing most combat to be fought using tooths, claws, knifes, and bang-sticks. However, the suppliers of the slowshields do not have humanity's best interests at heart, and the humans realise they're better off without the slowshields.

In Beyblade, the heroes have to learn a new technique for the beyblades but can't seem to get the hang of it. Their friend, Hillary, comes up with a practice technique that requires them to start from the basics of their Beyblade skill and slowly incorporate the technique into it. Tyson initially rejects it at first, but Ray gives it a shot the following morning which indeed allows him to wield the technique better. Tyson begrudgingly concedes and the rest of the heroes follow suit.

Highschool Dx D:
In preparation for his fight with Raiser Fenix, rookie devil Issei unlocks a temporary version of his dormant Balance Breaker form at the cost of allowing the dragon Ddraig to take over his left arm. When Issei's time in Balance Breaker runs out, it looks like he's helpless... until he uses his no-longer-demonic left arm to pull out a cross and holy water, then applies his basic Boost and Transfer powers to amplify their holy properties as he uses them to punch Raiser in the face.
As a Pawn-class devil, Issei can temporarily "Promote" into other chess pieces to improve his abilities, though this receives less and less focus as time goes on. By the time he's fully mastered the power of Balance Breaker, the effects of his current piece are so slight as to be almost unnoticeable. That is until the creator of Issei's Pawn pieces modifies their Promotion mechanic be to interact with Balance Breaker's armor, allowing it to Promote itself into various specialized forms.

Mega Man ZX Advent: While the Model A form - and especially its Homing Shots ability - was useful from the start, the other forms the protagonist (Grey/Ashe) can get will slowly overshadow Model A as they're needed in more specialized battles/stages. During the fight against the Final Boss, however, the Homing Shot becomes rather essential - it's the quickest way for targeting and attacking the boss' Attack Drones so you can disable its Deflector Shield that the drones generate.

In Dragonball GT, the so-called "Super Saiyan 4" transformation is not simply a further-evolved version of Super Saiyan 3. Instead it's the result of mastering the mindless Great Ape transformation which even the weakest Saiyans possess, then combining it with Super Saiyan in order to compact it into a human-sized Wild Man form.
