In most cases, when a work gets adapted into a movie, a play, an opera, a comic, a musical, a videogame, and for that matter even a book, you instantly have a crowd who catalogues changes and differences from adaptation to adaptation. Regardless of whether something is successful or not, there will be audiences who insist that the original source in whatever medium is better than the adaptation. This becomes especially heated if the work that succeeds commercially is held to have made severe changes to the material and yet those changes become how many perceive the original work.
Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_content_3'); })Then there are the exceptions. Those works which after being adapted turn out to be accepted by a good consensus of the public and the critics to be superior to the original sources, and vastly innovative in that regard. These adaptations become the more influential and important works than the original sources, considered to be more artistic and more aesthetic.
This trope is related to but different from Better Than Canon. That relates entirely to fan-made content and fan-art. This is a case of a professional adaptation made for general exhibition that is based on a pre-existing source. In some cases it might be an adaptation by the same creator or the same original company. It can also refer to Expanded Universe where some prefer the expanded content over the source it derives and spins off from. It's entirely separate from sequels which are technically adaptations from the original sources and oftentimes by the same creator, but most of those entries are covered in Even Better Sequel. It also differs from Adaptation Displacement. This isn't about an adaptation being more famous than the original, it's about a fan and critical consensus saying that the adaptation is superior. The trope can also be applied to certain sections of an adaptation, for instance a scene or character being better than the source, or the ending being better. It applies to remakes and also reboots.
Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_content_2'); })It can overlap with Creator-Preferred Adaptation but on the other hand it also coexists with Creator Backlash. Just because a creator likes or dislikes an adaptation, does not necessarily mean that it's true that everyone agrees it's better than the source. For it to hold true, it must be a new and separate adaptation of pre-existing material in the same medium or a new one. A continuation that is better and more important from the earlier work is not an adaptation, and that fits with My Real Daddy.

The James Bond games of The '90s and early 21st Century generally have a better reputation as licensed games than the Pierce Brosnan films do in the Bond canon. Strangely the Bond games after Brosnan was succeeded by Daniel Craig are not as highly regarded even if the films are considered improvements.
GoldenEye (1997) is one of the most famous and widely played console shooters of all time. Influential on the genre, with its multiplayer still being operational despite its console Nintendo 64 being fairly old. GoldenEye on the other hand is generally considered the best of the Brosnan films and an above average action film at best.
The original made-for-games storyline titles like NightFire and especially Everything or Nothing are considered better than the later Brosnan films. The latter game which has Brosnan's final time as the voice of Bond, is considered a far more fitting send-off than Die Another Day, and an excellent third-person action shooter for the Playstation 2.

The Batman: Arkham Series are considered the best superhero games, and among the best Batman stories in their own right. At the very least fans consider the game's unique portrayal of Hugo Strange and Scarecrow to be superior to previous comics and animated versions.

The cinematic universe is also inspired by the Ultimate Marvel line and many consider it a superior example of updating and modernizing the Marvel characters for the 21st Century (the stated intent of the Ultimate line) than the comics. The characters aren't made into borderline villains, and Nick Fury and SHIELD are shown as gray but well-meaning flawed individuals, while also deconstructing the all-powerful spy organization trope by showing how HYDRA used it to subvert it from within, which ends up shutting that organization to a shadow of its life. It also showed decisively that the magic and fantasy aspects which were downgraded in the Ultimate line could work alongside an up-to-date contemporary political-social setting.

Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange is considered by himself and by critics a minor work in his literary output. Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation is an era defining dystopian film influential on fashion, music, and design. Most notably, the original novel had a controversial Happy Ending that Kubrick excisednote The American version of the book which Kubrick read removed the ending and Kubrick didn't learn of the original until later, but he also said that even if he did, he would have changed the ending anyway. The author later soured on the film owing to a professional falling out with the director and defended his original ending, but most consider the film a more challenging expression of its moral question.

For many audiences, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not only a faithful adaptation of the comics, it's in significant respects better. A number of comics creators have also been noted to getting their comics from the movies, with Steve Gerber in fact noting that he feels that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the marvel continuity for him and he doesn't bother with the mainline comics anymore:
The Iron Man of the comics had a few good stories but it was generally agreed that he was B-List compared to Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men and that even within the Avengers, he was not as interesting as Captain America, Thor, Hank Pym, and The Hulk. He had a weak Rogues Gallery and a boring supporting cast on top of that. Robert Downey Jr. on the other hand gave such a brilliant performance as an unpredictable, tricksy, tragic, and down-to-earth superhero that Iron Man is now considered a pop culture sensation who has also become a company mascot, sharing the spot with Spider-Man. The film's casting also made Tony's supporting cast — Rhodey, Pepper Potts, Happy Hogan, the JARVIS AI — to be equally well-liked and memorable rounded characters.
Captain America: Civil War is considered much better or at the least, far less incoherent and indecisive than Civil War which inspired it. It believably put across the idea that heroes could fight each other while Both Sides Have a Point without making one side a Designated Hero or a Designated Villain compared to the comic.
The Guardians of the Galaxy were Z-List characters and now they are considered to be among their best characters. The characters of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Groot, Yondu are considered to be more rounded, complex, and tragic figures than the original comics version.

Batman: The Animated Series is considered by some to be the definitive take on the Batman mythos, and by some to be greater than the comics. Many comics creators openly admit to being more inspired by this cartoon in their takes on the character than anything else. Specifically many cite the Mr. Freeze of the show to be the ultimate version of the character and Mark Hamill's Joker as his best voice.

Film critics and horror fans generally consider The Shining to be better than Stephen King's the book, an opinion that is not shared at all by the author and some of the book's fans, who feel that the book's Jack Torrance is a more complex character. Film critics consider the Shining one of the greatest horror films ever made, and it has had a far greater influence even among horror writers than the book has.

Mozart's Don Giovanni is considered greater than the original Don Juan plays in Spanish and French. It is considered the most significant artistic adaptation of the Don Juan legend, with the cast of characters being especially complex, and Don Giovanni's final damnation and defiance making him a mythical figure rather than a simple Loveable Sex Maniac.

Batman: Under the Red Hood is considered greater than the original comic by Judd Winick. The streamlined adaptation upped the dramatic stakes of the Red Hood's return, heightened the tragedy of a former sidekick turned crazed super-villain and fixed some of the issues of the Hood's return which the more tangled comics continuity was handicapped from properly fixing.

The Witcher games and especially The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is considered greater than the original short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski. The author is indifferent and mildly critical of the games overshadowing his work, but the games have achieved critical and public acclaim significantly greater than his short stories being treated as an outstanding product of Polish culture, and even exchanged by government officials as a gift on diplomatic visits.
