Cast the Runner-Up	comment	Say you're a struggling actor just on the verge of your big break. You're down to the final two for this coveted role, and you're sure you'll get it... but nope, sorry, the other actor got it instead. But all is not lost! The casting people feel guilty for making you jump through so many hoops only to lose out on the role in question. Alternately, the runner-up was so good that simply tossing them aside is a waste of their talent. So they offer a consolation prize; it's not a lead role, it's not a big role, but it's in the film and it's yours if you want it. You'd be surprised how many small parts or featured extras do go to the actor who just missed out on getting the lead role. A variation is if they get the role and their scenes end up cut — so they create another character to make up for it. If the actor is really lucky — and this happens in television more than you'd expect — their new role can get expanded and become a regular or at least recurring. Compare Consolation Award.

John Cena met with David F. Sandberg for the role of Shazam. However, Cena turned down the offer due to scheduling conflicts with Bumblebee. Cena would eventually go on to join The Suicide Squad. Idris Elba was originally cast to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in The Suicide Squad after Smith passed on the film, allegedly due to scheduling issues. What would have happened if he, not Nicholas Brendon, had won the role of Xander? Felicia Day auditioned for the role of Fred in Angel that went to Amy Acker. She played the smaller recurring role of the potential Vi in Season 7 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Armin Shimerman first auditioned for Principal Flutie, before getting cast as Sunnydale High's next principal Snyder. Although the plan was for each principal to be killed off after a few episodes as a Running Gag, they liked his performance enough to keep him on the show until the end of season 3 (with a cameo appearance in "Restless" the following season). K. Todd Freeman was in the running for the role of Spike before being cast as Mr. Trick. Christian Kane auditioned for Riley Finn. He went on to play Lindsey McDonald on Angel. Kane says he played his audition for Riley "perhaps a little less than wholesome", which he feels resulted in Joss Whedon later casting him as a darker character. Adam Busch auditioned for a part in Angel before being cast as Warren Mears on Buffy.
