A story which begins with a protagonist either discovering a MacGuffin that belonged to a dead, insane, or otherwise miserable character, or attempting to investigate what happened to the said character. By the end of the story, the protagonist finds themselves in the same position as this person, and the next character starts to investigate what happened to them.
Gypsy Curses often work like this in media. Often, there's a Curse Escape Clause involved which allows the cursed one to pass the curse off to another.

All curses in Dark Souls work like this. When someone is cursed, they can't simply have it be broken. Instead, they must find someone or something else to pass the curse onto, causing them to become afflicted by the curse instead.

The 2009 movie The Lodger has a woman invite a mysterious young man to her apartment as a lodger. Soon after that, there is a string of murders mimicking those of Jack the Ripper, and the woman suspects that her lodger is the one committing them. The movie ends with the reveal that the woman was mentally ill and committed the murders herself, and the lodger was her Split Personality. However, in the final scene the lodger is seen again, coming to another house, implying that he is some sort of evil spirit that has been possessing different people and making them commit murders ever since the original Jack the Ripper.

Supernatural: A lucky rabbit's foot will cause it's owner good luck, until it is removed from their possession (which is inevitable). It then causes bad luck which will eventually kill the previous owner. The foot will continue killing its owners until it's destroyed.

The Bye Bye Man: The curse works like this, as saying or mentioning The Bye Bye Man's name will put that curse into effect for the unfortunate victims involved. Causing them to experience disturbing hallucinations and make the victim kill others in what they think is self-defense of their family or friends attacking them. The only way to avoid it is to either not to hear the name at all, kill the ones who have heard it to keep the name from spreading, and/or commit suicide to stop the hallucinations completely to render the being powerless.

In N. by Stephen King, a psychiatrist is visited by a patient who started suffering from Super OCD and delusional beliefs about an Eldritch Abomination after visiting the Ackerman's field. Soon after that, the patient commits suicide, the doctor decides to go to that place to investigate, and starts manifesting exactly the same symptoms. He also kills himself, so his sister begins her own investigation, and the cycle starts all over again.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure:
Diamond Is Unbreakable:
This is one of the abilities of Toyohiro Kanedaichi's Stand, Super Fly, a telephone tower that traps its User inside it, with attempting to leave it resulting in its User turning into a metal statue. The only way to escape is to get another person to enter the tower and leave while they're still in it, after which they'll become the new User.
Cheap Trick, Masazo Kinoto's Stand, works like this. Cheap Trick is a parasitic like being that clings on to its User's back. If someone looks at the User's back, Cheap Trick will kill their User and attach itself to the person who looked, making them the new User.
The Stand, Milagro Man, from JoJolion, works like this. The Stand makes it so that the User will constantly earn money and never lose any, eventually killing them by literally drowning them in cash. The only way to escape the Stand is to trick someone else into stealing the User's money, causing them to become the new User.

Discussed and invoked in Drag Me to Hell: Christine can pass along the gypsy-cursed button to someone and they will be dragged to hell in her place. And ultimately subverted. She considers passing it to her loving boyfriend, but changes her mind; she tries to Take a Third Option in giving it to Madam Ganush's corpse. However, she unknowingly put the wrong button in the grave, the curse is not lifted, and she is dragged to hell.

Ju-on and it's American counterpart The Grudge features a curse caught by going into the house where it originated from. After which it's only a matter of time before it comes for its victim. In some cases, some of its victims don't have to be by the house, just interacting with someone who has gone in it. A few have fallen prey due to trying to investigate what happened to previous victims.

Trials of Mana: About halfway through the Ghost Ship, the party meets up with a man named Matelo, who explains how he's been transformed into a ghost, and then proceeds to pass his curse on to the leader so that Matelo can leave. Faerie mentions that whoever or whatever is causing the curse must be nearby, leaving the remaining party members to find this being and make it set them free.
