Daywalking Vampire	comment	Nowadays, when vampires are exposed to direct sunlight, they usually suffer great pain and diminishment of power, turn to dust, or go up in flames. This trope is the opposite case: vampires are able to freely walk around in sunlight. Either nothing at all happens, or they experience mild discomfort. Sometimes they are stronger during the night, with daylight taking away some of their powers, but otherwise they are fine. This was in fact the standard in traditional Vampire lore and early Vampire fiction. Lord Ruthven, Varney the Vampire, Carmilla and Dracula could all prance around in broad daylight, and while some of these might be accustomed to sleeping during the day, daylight in itself was no danger to them. The trope that daylight is lethal to vampires came into being only with movies, specifically with 1922's loose Dracula adaptation Nosferatu. Sometimes a series may give a nod to this, or invent a "rational" explanation why some vampires can tolerate daylight and others can't. It can be as simple as the fact that the vampire is just so old or so powerful (or even both) that such weaknesses doesn't hurt them anymore. A common variation is to only have vampire/human cross-breeds be immune to sunlight (often among other vampire weaknesses). If Vampire Variety Pack is in effect, some vampires may be burned or weakened by sunlight while others are just fine.

On the flipside, some Antediluvians are able to survive during daylight hours due to their potent blood rendering them powerful enough to ignore the normal effects of sunlight, as excellently illustrated by Zapathasura, who had to be destroyed through the concentrated light of several suns using orbital mirrors by the Technocracy. In the Fifth Edition, some Thin-Bloods are known as "Day Drinkers" on account of being much more resistant to sunlight than even other Thin-Bloods — they still are severely weakened in sunlight (in gameplay, this manifests as their health tracker being halved and them being blocked from using any supernatural abilities as long as they move in sunlight), but it does no continuous damage, so nothing hinders them from staying out in the sun for hours except the practical limitation that it is easier to hunt for blood when you have your vampiric abilities, and that they still need sleep.

It's actually a combination of Auspex and Majesty that generates a visible Astral Projection and fools witnesses into believing it's solid. This trick, however, requires two disciplines at rank five, and a Bloodline Devotion to boot, meaning that it's EXTREMELY rare. Only a very specific sect of Ancient Egyptian vampires, the Bak-Ra (the Servants of Ra), can pull it off. Vampires of the Ordo Dracul also learn to make themselves more resistant to sunlight in a limited fashion. The highest ritual of the Followers of Seth shadow cult is called the Rite of Going Forth By Day, which is mostly what it sounds like. The downsides are, it requires a human sacrifice per use, and it is also only a projection. The Blood and Smoke/Requiem 2e rules update changes this around a little bit. Daywalking is possible, but painful if you have blood to spare and are low enough on the Power Meter and high enough on Humanity (Higher Humanity makes the damage less painful, lower Blood Potency makes it tick less frequently. A BP 1 Humanity 7 Vampire takes one point of lethal every ten minutes. With blood to spare, you can spend just shy of two hours in the sun...just watch out for people wondering why you're smoking). That said, once again, the Ordo Dracul can cheat this a bit to move you around on the chart to take less damage less frequently.
