This trope was rogue launched. Please add edits to the TLP draft, instead.
This person hasn't been voted, chosen or even appointed as The Leader, but is treated as such nonetheless. That's the de facto leader.
Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })The reason they came to that position can vary, but it always boils down to them having the most leadership skills, or at the very least, showing more leadership than everyone else on their team and being highly respected among their peers. For this reason, it's not uncommon for de facto leaders to also be either The Ace, The Face, or both.
They often have someone hierarchically superior to them, but if said person is deemed unpopular, incompetent, or simply cannot perform their duties properly, they will be seen as the better alternative, becoming the driving force behind the lower-ranked and can even have a total influence over their actual leaders without taking their place. Alternatively, in the absence or loss of an official leader without anyone to take their place, this person will step up to take charge of everything with little to no opposition, becoming the substitute leader.
Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })In smaller groups, they're often equal in rank to their comrades, who considers them as their chief, and are responsible for making difficult decisions and keeping the group together.
Can, but not always, be Number Two. May also be The Mentor. Contrast Almighty Janitor, a character who wields great power but isn't in a leadership position.

* Dragon Age:
Dragon Age: Origins: With the country of Ferelden already being short on Grey Wardens, and then the most experienced members of their ranks dying early into the game, the Player Character (henceforth known as "The Warden") becomes the unofficial leader of the forces trying to stop the Fifth Blight, as the only other Grey Warden (Alistair) has little confidence in his own ability to lead (and, in a What If? sidestory, his leadership does indeed end in failure). Later, Riordan, a more experienced Warden, assumes formal command but by this point, almost everyone follows the Warden.
Dragon Age II: Hawke and their companions are not part of any formal team or organization, but still travel together to deal with problems in the city of Kirkwall. Hawke is given unofficial leadership under the justification of Asskicking Equals Authority, as Hawke is by far the best fighter amongst them.
Dragon Age: Inquisition:
Early into the game, the Inquisition is brought together by several important characters: Cassandra Pentagast, Leliana, Cullen Rutherford and Josephine Montilyet. Cassandra acts as the unofficial leader of the Inquisition, making most of the final decisions until characters start looking toward the Player Character for leadership, who is later sworn in as the Inquisitor while Leliana, Cullen and Josephine serve as their advisors. Several people remark that it's remarkable that Cassandra gladly stepped down from her de facto leadership position with little issue (though she may regret it later if the Inquisitor is an asshole).
Chancellor Roderick becomes the unofficial leader of the Chantry (the major religion of Thedas) after every single person with higher rank than he does is killed in the Inciting Incident of the game. Subverted in that he is way in over his head and has basically no real authority, which means that the members of the Inquisition can walk over him and make their own decisions without his approval.
Cassandra, again, becomes the last Seeker of Truth at the end of her personal mission, after the rest of the order becomes corrupt and she is entrusted with the greatest secrets of the organization. This makes her the new Lord Seeker by default, though the title is pretty much meaningless at the time. Depending on the player's actions, she can resolve to rebuild a new Seeker organization with more accountability.

Borderlands 2 thrusts Lilith into the leadership of the Crimson Lance after Handsome Jack kills Roland. The "Commander Lilith and the Fight For Sanctuary" DLC makes it obvious that the pressure is mounting and she doesn't know what must be done, because the Crimson Lance grow complacent in the following year, and it's only because of the events of the DLC that she finally steps up and takes proper command of her people.

The Defenders: With a rotating cast of "members", the Defenders rarely have any true consistent leadership. However, the character that most consistently assembles the roster and calls the shots is Doctor Strange, whose knowledge of magic and other areas makes him capable of making decisions. On other occasions, Valkyrie has also taken leadership, as well as Misty Knight, though without Strange as a member.

In Dragon Ball, The Dragon Team has no official leader or any assigned positions. However, Goku being The Ace is usually seen as the leader type figure. In Goku's absence the role often goes to Piccolo who is The Strategist. Subverted in the Tournament of Power where they are forced to pick a team leader, with that position being given to Gohan due to being The Smart Guy.

Total Drama does this a lot, featuring multiple teams over the series, but with no obvious leaders.
Heather was this to the Screaming Gophers, being the resident Alpha Bitch and typically called the shots. Though of course due to how disliked she was, she came across a lot of opposition which namely included Gwen and Leshawna.
Either Duncan or Courtney typically fell in this role for the Killer Bass, with Duncan due to his tough guy attitude intimidating everyone. While Courtney being a Control Freak tended to boss people around.
Team Chris Is Really Really Really Really Hot had Alejandro naturally taking up the role of unofficial leader due to being The Ace. While a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, Alejandro was a very efficient leader, having both the strategy and the skills to help his team make it far, while picking off other teams.

Justice League of America: The most recognized version of the Justice League, comprised of all of DC Comics' top stars, is considered more of an "assembly" like the United Nations than a formal team. Thus, this version of the team typically lacks a "formal" leader that can give orders to the others, but when things get rough, almost everyone still looks to Superman more often than not. On other occasions, Batman and Wonder Woman also assume control as the former is one of the smartest men on Earth and the latter is a warrior with thousands of years of combat experience.

In Sword Art Online, Kirito's party has no official leader, though the leadership role typically falls to either Kirito or Asuna. Kirito as The Hero and Team Dad usually decides where they go, while Asuna being the Vice Commander of a guild excels in coordinating the team.

To be expected in the gangs of Orange Is the New Black:
Red's cooking skills made her the leader of the non Neo Nazi whites, which some people aren't too happy about, and it gets challenged several times later because of her presumption that she deserves power.
In her pursuit of justice for Poussey, Taystee becomes this during the riot, as does Daya...simply for picking up the gun that one of the COs dropped.
The lack of structure in the black women group in Season 2 means that Vee can worm her way in and become this by default.

Watership Down has Hazel shepherd a troop of marginal rabbits away from the doomed Sandalford Warren, seeking a new home. Resting in an orchid grove, one rabbit notes that Hazel's practicality makes him sound like a chief: Hazel-ra. Bigwig sneers, "That be the day I call him 'Chief,' it will." However, their further adventures soften Bigwig's thinking to where he squares against The General, declaring, "My Chief told me to guard this run, and that's what I'll do." Hazel became the de facto Chief Rabbit by being The Stoic of the group.

House of Anubis: Nina was never officially designated as the leader of Sibuna, but everyone treated her as if she was the leader- even before she was revealed to be The Chosen One. It's likely because she was the one given Sarah's locket, which made her the only one with the power to find all the treasure in the house— in addition to the fact that she was the first person to start the treasure hunting at all. She was also The Protagonist, so giving her the role as Sibuna's captain made sense from a writing stand-point, too.
