Space and time can be described as fabric, so what better way to manipulate it than by cutting it? Usually a bladed weapon or claws are used for such a purpose, sometimes noted to be an Absurdly Sharp Blade, but this could be done with any natural or artificial cutting implement. The common purpose for cutting the spacetime fabric is to create portals that can move you (and/or others) from point A to B. However, this can be used offensively, such as cutting a target from far away or cause a version of Tele-Frag onto the target. The Full-Contact Magic version of Thinking Up Portals. A Sub-Trope of Interdimensional Travel Device. Compare with Teleport Gun. Not to be confused with Portal Cut although the two can overlap depending on context/situation. |

The 3.5th Edition Weapons of Legacy sourcebook includes the Planeshifter's Knife, which seems inspired by the Subtle Knife. It was created by an ambitious student mage who wanted to plunder his institution's trove of tomes, but didn't stop to consider whether a college of master wizards would have some way of tracking stolen books. The weapon starts as a simple +1 dagger with an odd habit of balancing on its tip and spinning in the presence of outsiders, but as a wielder unlocks the knife's abilities, they can use it to slash a tear in reality to use as a hiding spot, similar to the rope trick spell. Eventually Planeshifter's Knife allows its wielder to instantly move to another plane, with the caveat that it can only do so after striking an extraplanar creature. | |

Horus Heresy: Due to the actions of First Chaplain Erebus, the Word Bearers Astartes Legion have access to athame blades. These look like crude daggers made of flint or unrefined metal, but they're steeped in the power of Chaos. In the miniature wargame, they aren't good at punching through armor, but can instakill anybody they wound. In the books, they're also incredibly useful in sorcerous rituals, and advanced users can use them to essentially teleport by slashing a hole in reality and make a jump through the Warp to hop planets. Note that this isn't limited to Chaos Sorcerers, but figures like Erebus and company can make direct jumps, while less "initiated" souls need guidance to follow a "route" through space and time. Given the nature of these jumps, it's also much safer than the relatively slow and unreliable FTL travel common to human factions. | |

Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition: From the Oriental Adventure sourcebook, the "Passage" weapon property allows a magic blade to slice open a portal to the spirit world. It acts as a plane shift spell, but the portal stays open 1-4 minutes and any creature can pass through from both directions. The 3.5th Edition Weapons of Legacy sourcebook includes the Planeshifter's Knife, which seems inspired by the Subtle Knife. It was created by an ambitious student mage who wanted to plunder his institution's trove of tomes, but didn't stop to consider whether a college of master wizards would have some way of tracking stolen books. The weapon starts as a simple +1 dagger with an odd habit of balancing on its tip and spinning in the presence of outsiders, but as a wielder unlocks the knife's abilities, they can use it to slash a tear in reality to use as a hiding spot, similar to the rope trick spell. Eventually Planeshifter's Knife allows its wielder to instantly move to another plane, with the caveat that it can only do so after striking an extraplanar creature. Ether scarabs are beetle-like creatures whose jaws are sharp enough to rip open brief, two-way portals between planes, allowing them to elude predators (and for other creatures to dart through the temporary portals). This also means anything bitten by an ether scarab takes persistent bleeding damage from its supernaturally sharp mandibles. Ethereal defilers are extraplanar Lizard Folk who, rather than using conventional spells like ethereal jaunt to pass between the Material and Ethereal Planes, have an "ethereal bore" attack that blasts through the planar boundaries in a burst of highly-damaging eldritch energy, which is typically how they enter combat. |

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: It's possible to perform this with a weapon whose user is experienced with the Spatial Element or if it's the property of the weapon itself. The Imperial Guardian Krishna even outright calls it "Dimensional Slash" and it's one of his trump cards, capable of slicing through even the toughest defenses due to the rending dimensions. Unfortunately for him, when he tries to use it against Zegion, the monster is able to No-Sell it (while also being struck with highly magnified gravity) due to his superior mastery of the Spatial Element letting him counter it. Zegion then adds insult to injury by returning the favor, with Krishna's attempt to counter with "Dimensional Slash" failing and being torn to shreds in retaliation. | |
