It's a staple of teen dramas: the Alpha Bitch is running unopposed for the presidency of the Absurdly Powerful Student Council. She gloats to the unpopular kids about her continued reign, until one of them says, "That's it! You've ruled this school for too long! I'm running against you!" The Dork Horse Candidate is born.
The Dork Horse Candidate is not just an underdog, but someone completely unsuited for politics. He lacks intelligence, charisma, popularity and administrative skill. There's usually a debate between the candidates, in which the dork horse is made to look like an even worse option.
The candidate can be most any character, but typically is not one of the Alpha Bitch's usual adversaries, such as the Loser Protagonist or The Snark Knight. However, these are usually the people who tell the Dork Horse Candidate that he has no chance of winning.
The candidate may assemble a Ragtag Bunch of Misfits advisory team. Each kid will have a task for which he or she is poorly suited. If someone is doing opinion polls, it will be Shrinking Violet or The Unintelligible.
The Dork Horse Candidate almost always wins, usually by one vote. Either he gives a Rousing Speech, the expected winner squanders his initial advantage, or some Deus ex Machina comes along to derail the supposedly inevitable outcome. Contrast with Nominated as a Prank, where this candidate's support is purely malicious. See also Dark Horse Victory.

In Sluggy Freelance, in the "Meanwhile in the Dimension of Pain" guest stories, the demons of said dimension hold an election to choose a new Demon Lord after Lord Horribus is banished. His scheming little brother Terribus runs for office, and his only opponent is the resident idiot Reakk. The demons are unenthusiastic about voting for either. In the end, Terribus wins through a Batman Gambit. The election is held by tearing wings off butterflies, but the butterflies all manage to fly into a beam of light that burns the demons. Terribus arranges for Reakk to end up briefly in the beam and retrieve a butterfly, allowing him to cast the only vote, because he knows Reakk is such an idiot he will accidentally tear off the wrong wing and vote for Terribus.

In The Simpsons, Bart Simpson runs for class president against Martin Prince. Everyone in the class prefers Bart, but he loses because he throws a preemptive victory party, meaning the only people who bother to vote are Martin and his equally geeky friend. Later, Homer cheers up Bart by convincing him that he's better off not being class president, because it's just extra work for no benefit.
Examined in an another episode where Homer reveals he ran for student body president and lost. However, it's revealed that he lost because the principal got involved when he found some of the students were planning on voting on Homer to win as a joke. The latter half has a fascinating What If? were he didn't get involved and Homer wins. While Homer is initially laughed at, Lenny and Carl both lampshade that Homer still winning despite being... well Homer, actually cheer him on and get the whole crowd to do so. Homer actually benefits from being student body president, he still ends up with Marge and ends up a lot more successful in life (though without kids.)

The issue of PS238 that introduced American Eagle and US Patriot Act had both of them running for class president as part of their ongoing efforts to prove that each was the more suited to be the definitive Captain Patriotic hero of their generation. Since their reckless over-competitive behavior and More-Patriotic-Than-Thou attitude had offended everyone else in the class by this point, the election was a landslide victory for... Tyler, who wasn't even running.

Azumanga Daioh. In the manga, the class only has one person willing to run for president, Genki Girl Tomo. No-one in class is really eager to vote for her, either. The teacher throws the class's most popular student up against her anyway. Chiyo wins 30-2, which does beg the question of who else would vote for Tomo. Chiyo, who didn't want the job anyway. At least it beats how the class president was chosen the previous semester - Yukari announced they needed one, waited five seconds for nominations and then declared a random guy in the front row the winner.

Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide - Played with in the fact that Ned has to be forced to run and his attempts to not get elected backfire hilariously. His reasoning for not running is because he views the entire thing as a popularity contest and thus, not worth it. However, he's surprised to discover that at least one unpopular kid won the election... the woodshop teacher. His main act as student president was using the car wash funds to get a new woodshop piece of equipment and was apparently well-received, still functioning to this day. After some motivation, he proceeds to go and get a good percentage of the votes. And yet, somehow, the weasel which is nominated every year as a joke ends up winning. Probably due to the odd writing of the rules, as the weasel ended up with most of the votes (as in the literal pile of votes).

In A Song of Ice and Fire when the Night's Watch is voting on a new Lord Commander, the cook Three Finger Hobb is put forward for consideration, and consistently gets a very small number of votes. It's speculated that he's being voted for by brothers who want him out of the kitchen. He doesn't win.
Another candidate in the same election is Dolorous Edd Tollett. From his own comments it's quite probable he's only running to add some much-needed snark at the proceedings. This does earn him more than a few votes, though, even though he ultimately drops out to throw his support behind Jon Snow.
