As real black powder is extremely finicky as well as unsafe, a mixture of flour and corn starch is often employed (dyed dark grey with food coloring) blown onto the stage by fans. It has the advantage of settling realistically on the actors' faces and clothes but spares the audience and the actors the stench of black powder as well as the safety hazards. This can also be used to stand in for ash. When staging comic plays, characters may fire gummies or even certain veggies as projectiles. Just about anything is three times funnier when candy is involved, especially a formal duel. Using celery or various kinds of onion like arrows is also common. This is done partly because actual ammunition can be rather pricey, partly as a safety measure (even a blank is potentially lethal), and partly as an artistic choice.

Ultimate: In addition to bringing back all characters who have employed edible ammunition in previous games, the game introduces Banjo and Kazooie via DLC; one of their abilities is shooting eggs like in their source games.
