Fanon Welding — a common type of Stock Epileptic Tree related to Fanon — is the act of claiming that two or more unrelated works are somehow secretly related to each other, such as sharing the same universe or continuity. To support their theories, fans will point out any supposed connection between the works in question as proof that the events and elements appearing in one work are canon to the other all along, regardless of the author's intention. Perhaps the pair of separate works that get this treatment happen to be made by the same author (though this isn't always the case), and both share some specific Recurring Element despite taking place in entirely different continuities. Maybe the author wanted to put in a reference from another one of their works for fun, such as a Reused Character Design or something else, but the audience mistook it for a Continuity Nod, a character who is canon all along, or a sign that the work takes place in an alternate universe to the universe of another work. Or else there is a particular actor who starred in more than one live-action movie or show, and that actor happens to be known for playing the same character type in each.
