Fashion is a funny thing. You'd think that people would want to wear garments, shoes, and accessories that were comfortable and serviceable, but as many a person with blistered feet can attest, clothing and footwear aren't always designed with comfort in mind. Some people protest and opt to wear only pain-free fashions. Others suffer because we must be elegant or die. Painful hairpins, ill-fitting shoes, scratchy sweaters, choking neckties, sharply pointed Victorian collars… oh yes, fashion hurts. Painfully, this is Truth in Television: the fashion-minded have choked, mutilated and even poisoned themselves in various ways as long as the concept of fashion has existed. Though it's frequently played for comedy, this trope can also be invoked by a work in order to create An Aesop about the vanity of focusing too much on physical appearance at the expense of health or comfort, and often represents the trappings of societal norms. Refusing to wear the painful fashion sometimes becomes an act of rebellion; alternatively, those not wise enough to realize the absurdity of fashion may become the subject of ridicule. Such harmful fashions are not only excluded to the human race. In the 1800s, stylish carriage horses were often forced to wear "bearing reins" to keep their heads up, often to an extreme degree that maimed the poor animals. The practice was partially abolished in part to protests raised by Anne Sewell's famous novel, Black Beauty, which also delivers some scathing criticism on practices like "docking" the tails of horses and the tails and ears of dogs (that is, cutting bits of them off) to make them look more stylish. The same goes for many purebred cats and dogs, who often must endure crippling genetic diseases and abnormalities for the sake of adhering to (rather capricious) standardized breeding shapes. One example is preserving the classic "golden retriever" type; breeders would sometimes resort to inbreeding their dogs, which, unsurprisingly, led to a myriad of defects, including hip degeneration. And the classic British Bulldog has such a malformed ribcage that it cannot breathe without pain. |

Still, they're so popular that a girl offers to buy them from Nikki at the end of the episode, despite them being visibly covered in blood. One episode sees Caitlin gleefully getting strappy high-heels that are three inches tall. A male example with the episode "Girlie Boys", where Jonesy gets taken to a spa to get his unibrow waxed, and while painful, he and a few of his guy friends become regulars after finding it to be a great place to find girls, willing to go through similarly painful treatments to stick around. Several of the characters in the American Girl series struggle with fashions and styles of the day. Felicity would like to run around freely without having to wear stiff stays and not in long skirts, saying she wishes she could wear breeches like a boy. Josefina is gifted her late mother's childhood skirt from her grandmother; it's snug, and when she dances in it (to her grandmother's disappointment, as she's considered too young to dance in public) the button on the waistband pops off. Kirsten's traditional Swedish clothes are unsuitable for a New York summer; she put them on in March in Sweden and has been wearing them since. Addy's mother during a trip to Cape Town, NJ, sets her hair in rag curls which Addy fusses about having to keep her hair nice; it lasts until she goes swimming. Grandmary's rule for Samantha is to wear long underwear from September to June to prevent illness, and is considered passé by the more-fashionable Agnes and Agatha. In Changes For Molly Molly's obsessed with curling her hair so she'll be more likely to get picked for the lead role in a patriotic tap-dance performance. After potentially trying a home permanent with no guidance, her older sister Jill talks her out of it and sets her hair in pin-curls. They work, but then she sets them while wet and catches a cold, so she's not able to perform at all. The upside is that she's the only one home when her father comes back from the war. Courtney gets her ears pierced in her first book, and describes her ears as bright red and throbbing in the moments afterwards. They heal fine, though. |
