When a pursuer's target flees in a car and the pursuer lacks their own means of following, they will hail a nearby taxi and direct the driver to "Follow that car!". The taxi driver tends to obey without question, causing a particularly interesting Chase Scene as a stranger without pursuit experience is now involved. This is an alternative to the pursuer commandeering the cab themselves through a Flashed-Badge Hijack. If the target anticipates this tactic, expect the cabbie to be Not My Driver. This is a Discredited Trope or even a Dead Horse Trope, as taxi drivers need to be directed to an address or landmark, and aren't prepared to engage in random car chases on duty. Related gags can involve characters always wanting to say this line to a cabbie, or cabbies who have gone their career waiting for the same direction. A common subversion is for the speaker to make the mistake of saying this before they get in, and the cab taking off without them. |
