Holiday Mode may do anything from changing a single sound or sprite, to adding extra enemies, or even giving access to levels that are not normally available. One of the most common holidays to be noted by games—especially western games—is Christmas, but other special dates or times may be observed as well. There's also a Halloween mode (that began in 2009), where taunts are often replaced with a dance move from the music video for Michael Jackson's "Thriller". Which is incredibly annoying if you're trying for a taunt-kill or one of the "snapshot while taunting" achievements. Ah yes, the Halloween mode. From 2010 onwards, each Halloween they implemented a new Optional Boss (or in 2013's case, a pseudo-gamemode involving the use of magic) and a backstory for it. These boss fights would take place on a Halloween-ified version of one of the maps. All players who defeat the boss (at any time) will get a cosmetic item that can be put on any class. December has Australian Christmas (or Smissmas), where crates drop containing valuable loot that can be opened with specialized keys. In 2010 there was one variety that contained hats and miscs, where in 2011 they were separated into Naughty and Nice crates, the latter containing Christmas lights to decorate stock weapons with and the latter containing new aesthetic items. In 2012 onwards, the Naughty and Nice crates returned, this time the Naughty crates giving pre-decorated festive versions of several weapons. 2015's Tough Break Update (that took place during the month of December) gave you "festivized" weapon reskins (these work similar to the weapon reskins from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive). That's right: a reskin of a reskin.

You get to help out Impostoclaus (a giant jelly with a moustache, glasses, a pipe, and a santa hat) who gives you tokens that you can trade in for Santy hats, the more expensive versions of which cause snow to fall around you. The tokens can also be traded in for boxes which give you white versions of lower-tier armor. Lastly, around the time when Spiral Knights was released, you get to help out a baker whose cakes turned into monsters. Haven doesn't actually change much for this event, but you can trade in the tokens from the monster-cakes for cupcake-esque hats, the most expensive version of which matches your player's color and lasts permanently.

The Mobile edition gains several minor holidays with their own special items and, in the case of Easter and Thanksgiving, special bosses. These include: The Lunar New Year in January, Valentine's Day in February, St. Patrick's Day from March 5th to 31st, Easter throughout April, Oktoberfest from September 27th to Oktober 31st and Thanksgiving throughout November. Valentine's Day, Easter and Thanksgiving is also shared with the 3DS version. (The WiesnbrÃ¤u of Oktoberfest is present but not the rest of the items in the 3DS version and while the Guide mentions St. Patrick's Day, it also doesn't occur in the 3DS version). In 1.4, reaching the final wave of the Pumpkin Moon or Frost Moon unlocked the respective holiday's effects for one in-game day which is especially helpful for getting 100% Completion of the bestiary as it counted Halloween and Christmas enemy variants along with needing the Snowglobe to summon the Frost Legion and thus summon Santa Claus to stay in a vacant home.

A special store opens during those weeks where you can use special currency, unique to each festival, to buy festival-exclusive apparel and familiars themed around that element. Additionally, there is an official contest each month where users can submit skins and accents, and the winners will have their skin/accent published for free and available to the entire player base through the Marketplace and Coliseum. Unofficially, the members of a flight will organize special events and contests on the forums during their festival, and it's tradition for the other ten flights to hold off on dominance pushes for the week before a festival so that a flight can have guaranteed dominance (and its gameplay benefits) during their own festival.
