A Stock Phrase used to evaluate a person's mental capabilities or vision when they have experienced head trauma or lost their glasses. A person will ask them "How many fingers am I holding up?" They can receive a wide variety of responses, such as: The patient is seeing double. The evaluator is not holding up any fingers and the patient calls them out on it. The patient says something nonsensical and then falls down again. The patient is perfectly fine, but lacks the ability to count the fingers due to blindness or innumeracy. The patient gets snarky, asking how many fingers they're holding up.+The correct answer is "one". Possibly two if you're British. And that one finger can vary depending on where you are. Generally, this is not a reliable nor scientific means of accurately accessing the extent of a patient's injuries. Not to be confused with how many fingers a person has— that's Four-Fingered Hands. If a character is an amputee who is missing fingers, or from a species with more fingers than humans, this trope may be played for laughs. |
