Some bets are for money or material possessions. Other times, it's a person's dignity that's on the line. Sometimes called a "penalty game" or "batsu (punishment) game" in Japanese media, this trope is when two or more characters make a bet where the loser must do or be subjected to something humiliating. Common penalties involve crossdressing, undressing (because Naked People Are Funny and/or Fanservice) silly dances, shaved heads, eating disgusting things, or could go all the way up to becoming the winner's Wager Slave. In South Korean media, specifically Variety Shows and the Kpop scene, finger-flicking the loser's forehead, giving them ugly makeup, slapping their butt, and hitting them with a squeaky hammer toy are all common types of penalty games. This can be used as an example of the wacky hijinks of a group of friends. Or for this trope's darker side, it can be used to characterize an antagonist as someone who's not satisfied with simply defeating his opponents. This guy wants to utterly humiliate them. This can also set the villain up to be Hoist by His Own Petard and get himself subjected to the humiliating fate he wished upon the heroes. This is a favorite thing for The Gadfly and Troll looking for entertainment in embarrassing others. Super-Trope of Wager Slave, where the Humiliating Wager is a period of servitude, and Strip Poker, where players place bets on their own clothing. At King of the Ring 1995, Bret Hart defeated Jerry Lawler in a "Kiss My Feet" match. Lawler prepared for the match by doing things like wallowing barefoot through stables to make his feet into Nausea Fuel, while Hart trained for the actual match. When Hart won, he made Lawler kiss not just his feet, but Lawler's own as well. As a result of Maven losing a match, Simon Dean (an evil fitness guru) once had to eat 20 cheeseburgers. He threw up after he finished the last one. As if the infamous "Bra and Panties" matches weren't humiliating enough, there was this one where the winner got to spank the loser. In the match shown here between Tori Wilson and Candice Michelle, winning the match and the wager only required getting ahold of the paddle, in which case the winner was allowed to spank the loser. There was a Twist Ending, however, when one of them succeeded. |

At CHIKARA Aniversario Blue, May 20, 2005, Knight Eye for the Pirate Guy (Lance Steel and Jolly Roger) defeated Sweeney and ShareCropper in a match where, had Sweeney's team won, Allison Danger would have to be Sweeney's "slave" for 30 days, but, if Knight Eye won, Sweet 'n' Sour International would have to appear in diapers the following night. Knight Eye won when Sweeney was Hoisted by His Own Petard after accidentally hitting ShareCropper with a chain. Steel pinned ShareCropper for the win. The following night, Aniversario Orange, Sweeney walked out and said that ShareCropper wasn't there so he doesn't have to appear in a diaper. Leonard F. Chikarason threatened Sweeney with not being able to wrestle for CHIKARA again if he didn't live up to the stipulation in the contract. Sweeney stormed off and came back 10 minutes later with Sweet 'n' Sour International (Crossbones, Rorschach, Mano Metalico) and himself all wearing diapers. In Negima! Magister Negi Magi, Albiero Imma forges a bet with Evangeline on the match between Asuna and Setsuna during the Tournament Arc. If Setsuna wins, Albiero will tell Evangeline information about Nagi Springifield, a man she's desperately looking for. If Asuna wins, Evangeline has to enter her next match wearing a School Swimsuit, much to her embarrassment. As the battle wages on, Albiero ups the ante with information about Asuna as well... And more fetish-inducing wear for Eva. When Asuna is disqualified for breaking tournament rules, Eva sinks to her knees in sheer relief that she wouldn't have to humiliate herself in front of the "lowly humans". Then Albiero tells her that he would've given up the information regardless of the outcome and just wanted to see her panic. | |

The Greyhawk short story "Keoland Blues" by Pauli Kidd, featuring the characters from the Greyhawk Classics series of novels, has Escalla bet the Justicar that her adventuring knowledge will prove better than his, saying the loser will have to cook dinner. When Jus points out he always cooks dinner, she says he'll have to do it in an apron, with a flower behind his ear. At the end of the story, when Polk proves to have had the most pertinent knowledge, Enid declares that they both have to cook him dinner with flowers behind their ears. | |
