Someone is mostly straight or gay, with one exception. A romantic rationalization that removes (or tries to remove) potential squick from a non-standard attraction (Brother–Sister Incest, Mayfly–December Romance, homosexual for an otherwise heterosexual character or vice versa, etc.) often uses this phrase. Since the character (usually) acknowledges the unusualness of the potential pairing, the writer gets to assure the audience they shouldn't have a problem with it either and to minimize the deviation from Canon characterization. If they don't feel like explicitly naming themselves, this might be one outcome or implication of the Bisexual Love Triangle. The examples presented here can often be placed in three categories: Sole Exception: The character in question has a one-off attraction to that person that transcends their sexual preference, based on mutual compatibility or otherwise emotional attraction. Even the Gays/Straights Want Them: The target of attraction is presented as being physically attractive enough to transcend the sexual preferences of people, not just the attracted character. Closet Key: The exception gradually becomes the rule for that character (this not being a subversion as such as the trope applies at the beginning of the relationship and is seen as responsible for the gradual reveal of the character's sexuality/gradual transition of their gender preference. Examples of this should go on Closet Key. This is often an implicit assumption in some works that pairs characters that are generally portrayed as heterosexual (or homosexual — and/or related). When it's made explicit, it's usually referred to as "We're Not Gay We Just Love Each Other" (WNGWJLEO) in ficdom, where it's often criticized for its homophobia. As such, it's now an almost thoroughly Discredited Trope in Slash Fic. Since it often preludes a first kiss or actual sex, it's extremely common with "pure" characters who the writers are otherwise hesitant to show having an explicit interest in sexuality. This trope can be diametrically opposed to No Bisexuals, which assumes that a given character can only be either heterosexual or homosexual with no exceptions; or cut down in the middle 50/50 in terms of attraction. Alternatively it could be an example of No Bisexuals if all characters experiencing attraction to multiple genders define themselves as homosexuals or heterosexuals with exceptions without acknowledging bisexuality as a possible option. A likely requirement for any non-bisexual person in a relationship with someone who then experiences a Gender Bender. Or the main character of a Dating Sim. In the case of a homosexual pairing, it can result in a limited form of Last Het Romance if the relationship sticks. In settings resembling Real Life, this trope is only about heterosexuality and homosexuality. In fantasy and Sci-Fi settings, it can also be about variables that don't exist in real life, such as a person only being attracted to elves but making an exception for one very special human. However, Tenko seems more willing to tolerate boys a bit more when they take up Neo-Aikido, a martial arts she developed with the head priest of a temple her parents sent her to (and that head priest would become her master). In her Love Suite Event, Tenko directly tells Shuichi that he has defeated her in a Neo-Aikido sparring match, and is free to do whatever he wants to her because of this. She then admits that she challenged Shuichi to the sparring match because she is in love with him, suggesting that Tenko may have a heavily repressed romantic attraction to boys. This makes sense since her misandry does not stem from any actual trauma (like Mahiru's attitude towards boys did), but rather from gullibility on her part; her master, a male, is suggested to be joking around when he told her that a boy touching her weakens her moves, as does being too excited for Valentine's Day and Christmas and eating more than three sweets a day, and Tenko took all this at face value. | |

In Runaways, Karolina Dean's feelings for Nico Minoru were hinted at throughout volume 1, culminating with Karolina sheepishly blushing when Nico says she has sworn off boys in vol. 1 #18. Once they found out their parents were super villains and went on the run, Karolina is shown to dislike Nico's relationship with Alex. However, Karolina's feelings were not explicitly expressed until vol. 2 #7 when Karolina startles Nico with an attempted kiss. Nico had not shown romantic feelings for Karolina previously and turns Karolina down, saying that she prefers boys and wants time alone. However, when Karolina decides to travel to her home planet Majesdane with Xavin, Nico is distraught and seems to react the strongest to Karolina's departure despite not showing many signs of romantic feelings or even a close friendship during the course of the series. Nico was very upset by her departure and tried to use a spell to bring her back, but was stopped by Gert. While Karolina was away, Nico kept her bracelet, holding it when praying. When Karolina later returns to Earth, Nico asks her where she attempted to kiss her to prove that she wasn't an imposter. Conversely and ironically, DiDi herself, while sometimes unsure of her own sexuality, mostly pursues men. However, following that incident with Kiley, she decides that she's found the love of her life — and hence that she is now, for practical purposes, a lesbian. After the expert seductress Zii gets the not-very-bright Sonya into bed, the latter spends a lot of time declaring that she's "not a lesbian" (including when Sonya is eating Zii out), but also that her heart belongs to Zii. However, it's obvious to anyone who knows what the words mean that she's functionally bisexual, with Zii as her Closet Key. (She barely seems to have heard of the word herself; when she's reminded of it, she does acknowledge that it might suit her.) How she adjusts her self-image when she starts having sex with other women is unclear (though given that the first other woman in question is her arch-enemy Yuki, there's plenty of scope for weird denial). Back when Angel and Zii were friends, Zii believed that Angel was strictly into women, and she tends to be clear on stuff like that — but then it turned out that Angel was (and still is) obsessed with Jerzy. The One-Gender Race asari seem to provoke this reaction from pretty much everyone. Sha'ira, the asari "Consort" from the first game, appears to be wildly popular with both male and even some female humans, and there are at least hints that it's not limited to her. For example, one of the "background" characters you overhear in the third game is a female marine whose male compatriots are a little weirded out by her desire to join them on a "boys' night" watching hot asari dancers.note The character's "human" sexual preferences are left somewhat ambiguous except that she is very sexually aggressive. Another background character is a human female cheating on her husband with an asari. In the second game, you can see a human, a turian, and a salarian on the salarian's bachelor party. They are watching an asari exotic dancer and the salarian is explaining how his species is asexual and marriage is more like a business contract...but finds him slowly being Distracted by the Sexy. If you talk to Mordin, the salarian doctor/scientist a lot, sometimes he thinks you are trying to woo him (if you're not romancing anyone else on the ship). He tells Shepard that he's not interested, because the salarian sex drive is generally dormant outside specified mating periods. However, he remarks in the same breath that if he would ever get it on with a human, said human would be Shepard, regardless of gender. Furthermore, asari are apparently capable of awakening a salarian's dormant sex drive. On the human side (and a more relatable/traditional example) we have the Male!Shepard / Kaidan romance with dialogue that indicates this is out of the norm for both of them. This is probably used to justify why a Male!Shepard can't romance Kaidan in the first game even though Fem!Shepard can. Let's just say that Shepard is this for pretty much everyone. S/he's basically a human asari, and could probably romance a Reaper with minimal effort if s/he wanted to. |

In Saints Row IV, all romance options are available to both genders, even when the love interest in question has shown absolutely zero attraction to that gender before, implying that this trope is in effect. Invoked with Pierce, who says that he "usually doesn't swing that way" before accepting… regardless of the player's gender. It's implied on several occasions that Pierce is both bisexual and absolutely terrified of The Boss. So it's possible that his normal orientation is just whatever The Boss isn't (though that doesn't explain why the Boss themself would be his sole exception). Another interpretation is that he normally doesn't swing any way at all and the Boss is his sole exception to that (recall that in Saint's Row 2, his immediate reaction to seeing a stripper was to say she had nice shoes). |

Catherine: The Full Body version has an option for Vincent to ditch the love triangle he's stuck in and romance newcomer Rin instead. However, he makes that decision only after he accidentally finds out Rin actually male. After some introspection, Vincent realizes that being with Rin makes him happy, because he feels he can be himself around him. He also realizes that gender doesn't matter to him, and even outs himself as bisexual to his friends. While this isn't too unusual, Rin's True Ending certainly is. Rin is actually a member of a race of shapeshifting Angelic Aliens, and merely his human form is an androgynous male. His real form is a cute little pink blob with a glowing antennae, so there might not even be a word that accurately describes what gender Rin truly is. By that point, however, Vincent is long past caring, and practically says this trope verbatim. Toby and Erica's relationship could be this as well. In Catherine, Toby is Squicked out when he discovers that his girlfriend Erica is transgender and she used to be known as "Eric" back in high school and Toby bemoans that he wants his V-card back. However, in Full Body, it's revealed that they're still dating despite Erica's transgender revelation — the revelation in Rin's route actually shows Toby relaxing even more about the idea, and talking happily about how Erica painted his nails as a couple's activity. |
