Bob walks into a store. He's a man on a mission. He knows what he wants, and may the good Lord help anyone who stands in his way. But lo and behold, a mob of overly helpful salespeople lay right into him the moment he has his foot in the doorway.
Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })If the salespeople are especially pushy, this may be a sign you're at Honest John's Dealership. It can definitely be Truth in Television, and in case there was any question about it: Yes, they are normally forced to do this as a condition of their job.
Compare Annoying Video Game Helper and Unwanted Assistance.

Happened in one episode of Chuck: Emmett was up for review and the staff began slacking off in an effort to make him look bad. However Emmett confronted Morgan and made a deal: If the sales staff made Emmett look good, he could get promoted out of the store, working for both himself and the staff. Emmett wanted a transfer, and the staff wanted him gone. This lead to the staff acting hypercompetently in an attempt to make Emmett look good as a sign of his leadership abilities. However it backfired when Emmett revealed that the promotion he was actually up for was Big Mike's job, and he manipulated Morgan into getting Mike demoted so he could take his place.

Deconstructed in Retail, since it tells things from the other perspective. Several strips have been based around customers who complain about "pushy" salespeople, but then expect the assistants to psychically know when they do need help without being told.

Daria: In "Malled", Daria gets her picture taken with a crowd of eager salespeople because she's the 10,000th customer. Never mind the fact that she just wanted to redeem her coupon and get out of there as efficiently as possible.

A Saturday Night Live sketch involves a man in a restaurant trying to propose to his girlfriend, only for their server to come by the table constantly and interrupt with unnecessary "Anything you need"-type questions. He finally shouts out his proposal over the waitress's talking; his girlfriend accepts, and at last they're ready to order. However, when he tries to get the server's attention, she snaps at him: "I've only got two hands, jeez!"
