A character lets go of the Jetpack he/she is wearing as a desperate or cunning attack against enemies. Given the combustible contents of the jetpack, it can become an effective explosive weapon if not a powerful projectile, or a distracting explosion. Alternatives include a detachable fuel tank of a vehicle.
Compare with Weaponized Exhaust, which weaponizes the jetpack without losing it, Ramming Always Works, which is about running a vehicle into a target (usually another vehicle) to damage or destroy it, and Outfit Decoy, which is about distracting enemies by taking off an article of clothing.
Also see Made of Explodium, in case you were wondering why the jetpack explodes on contact instead of simply making a very large dent in whatever it hit, and Suicide Attack, if the character is killed while still wearing the jetpack in the attack. Riding the Bomb may be the inverse of this trope. Compare with Emergency Cargo Dump for when fuel tanks are discarded to prevent or delay a crash.

In Grossology, in the episode "Fartzilla", Fartor is causing chaos in Fartzilla, a Humongous Mecha dinosaur powered by farts. Ty realizes that farts are composed of combustible methane and launches his jetpack straight into the exhaust, causing the methane to set alight and sends the mecha blasting off into the atmosphere.

Inverted in a particularly memorable cutscene in Front Mission 4, where the bad guys strap cruise missiles to the back of their Mini-Mecha as makeshift jetpacks and ride them - skimming barely meters above the ground - into a friendly base, dropping off at the last moment before impact.

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: In the anime, Io ejects one of the Full Armor Gundam's propellant tanks to create a fake explosion to initially fool The Living Dead Division into thinking it was destroyed. Later, Io lodges the other propellant tank on a Zaku to send it flying ahead of him, then launching a missile at the tank to cause a huge explosion.

D.Va in Overwatch has her ultimate attack, in which she rigs her jet-propelled mecha suit to self-destruct and "drops" it with all momentum being applied. It deals 1000 damage to anything in range when not blocked by a shield, and is often used to clear away points of interest, such as control points or payloads.

The Fatum sub-lifter backpacks of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED's Justice Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny's Infinite Justice Gundam blur the line between this trope and Attack Drone, being essentially a winged jetpack able to detach and fly under remote control for ramming attacks. The Infinite Justice's Fatum unit even has beam sabers mounted on the tip and wing leading edges. Eventually played straight in the final episode of SEED Destiny, when Athrun first rams the Fatum through the Minerva's engines to cripple the ship, then flies into the Requiem and rams the sub-lifter into the cannon's firing chamber, destroying both.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla: When Mechagodzilla's jetpack gets its gun attachments blown off, it fires the rest of it off at Godzilla to knock him down. Something similar happens in the sequel when Mechagodzilla fires his Shoulder Cannons at Godzilla except they detonate this time.

Pacific Rim: Uprising: Jake repurposes one of Scrapper's two vital ion cells into an impromptu EMP grenade to fight off November Ajax. It works ... for about ten seconds. Cue Ajax' One-Hit KO against poor little Scrapper, on top of the latter running out of power from losing one of the ion cells.

In Hogs of War, the jetpack works like this - it can be jettisoned in mid-air, dropping it like a bomb below and allowing the pig who was using it to float to safety on a parachute.

In the Super Smash Bros. installments in which he appears, Diddy Kong's Rocketbarrels can unintentionally serve this purpose, as they only go flying off if Diddy is knocked off of them, and they fly somewhat randomly if they do. However, this has on several occasions resulted into them crashing into the opponent, even several seconds later.
