Kappa is a Greek letter, as well as a type of Indian tapioca dish. But this article isn't about those kinds of kappa. There are thousands of Youkai in Japanese mythology... but one of them is far more popular with the public than the others. The Kappanote meaning "river child(ren)" is a river-dwelling creature of Japanese folklore. It is often depicted in Anime and modern media as an anthropomorphic turtle with a domed head and a ring of spiky hairs sticking out from it. In Japanese myth, the kappa is a river-dwelling spirit who likes to eat human entrails and blood. It has a deep bowl-like depression in its head that is full of water, which is the source of its power. That bowl is surrounded by scraggly hair (transformed into the "spikes" of the modern incarnations by the Anime Hair phenomenon). Those confronted with imminent devouring by a Kappa are advised to take two courses of action: The first, and most preferable, is to give the kappa a cucumber, inscribed with one's name in some tellings. The cucumber is the Trademark Favorite Food of the kappa, and a kappa so bribed will spare the giver. It may even befriend the human for the tasty gift. The other action: Bow to the kappa. Kappa are extremely polite, and will always bow too. Bowing will cause the water to fall out of their bowl, weakening them and allowing you to escape. In any case, don't bother trying to fight them, as they love sumo wrestling. Kappa have undergone a bit of Disneyfication that bowdlerizes out their gruesome aggression and strict need for water in their bowl. It is a necessity of and to their immense popularity, courtesy of which they pop up in a lot of Japanese works for many different audiences. Even those works that aren't explicitly mythological like to throw in a kappa or two. While the kappa hasn't reached the same level of popularity elsewhere, Pop-Cultural Osmosis from anime means that Western works sometimes do feature one. There are many different regional names for the kappa, and appearance varies considerably between regions as well. Notable examples include the hyousube (bald, hairy, gibbon-like creatures which like eggplants), garappa (extremely tall and lanky kappas from Kyushu), suiko (or "river tiger"), kawa akago (red-skinned baby-like creatures), and kawatengu (literally "river tengu", with the ability to create fire). The mizuchi is depicted as a kappa in some regions, but in older sources appears as a shapeshifting river dragon. Creatures in other regions similar to kappa include the Chinese Shui Gui ("water monkeys"), as well as the Filipino Siyokoy (a monstrous type of goblin-like merfolk which is also said to kidnap and eat children that walk nearby the rivers it lives in). The third disciple of Tripitaka, Sha Gojyo, in Journey to the West is often represented as a kappa, though the actual tales depict him more as a river-dwelling oni (and in the original Chinese version, it was a river of sand). Not to be confused with a rather famous Twitch emoticon.note As of 2019, this "kappa" is very popular in German youth slang, meaning "idiot". Nor with the Web Comic Kappa, although it does feature anthropomorphic sea creatures, including the eponymous fish-boy. Sister trope of Our Goblins Are Different. |

River Monsters presents the theory that the legend of the Kappa originated from the Japanese Giant Salamander, one of the largest amphibians in the world capable of easily growing to the size and weight of an average 12 year old boy. The animal has strong clenching jaws and a bite like a snapping turtle, with more than enough strength to grab a small child by the leg and drag them under — or, if the size difference is in the salamander's favor, just skip to its usual hunting tactic and inhale them whole note The latter is a rather profoundly unrealistic scenario, as even the biggest salamanders have a narrow throat that would be very hard to fit a human head or shoulders down, even if the victim was extremely small. Japanese parents had good reason to tell their kids not to go down to a river by themselves, sort of like how stories of Drop Bears may have been started to keep Australian children out from under eucalyptus or gum trees.

Inuyasha: Like most other types of ykai, kappa turn up occasionally: Kagome's grandfather presents her with "the mummified hand of a kappa" as a birthday gift. Kagome, unimpressed, gives it to her cat before her grandfather can finish explaining the significance. When Kagome saves a boy from drowning early in the series, a villager impressed by her swimming skills takes it to mean she's a kappa. And an actual living kappa appears as a servant of Chokyukai the boar demon as part of a parody of the Journey to the West. The kappa looks roughly like a turtle that walks upright, and is introduced as Sa Gojyo, but has no lines and doesn't otherwise follow any of the traditional folklore associated with kappa. Inu Yasha once tried to get information from some kappa, but they turned out to be almost Too Dumb to Live. |

Ayakashi Triangle: One of the Recurring Extra ayakashi that Suzu knows is a kappa named Donpa, a child-sized humanoid with a beak, turtle shell, and grass skirt that ends his sentences with -ppa. Rather than a bowl, the top of his head is a hairless mound that secretes a liquid that can be turned into a Healing Potion, which Reo trades sake for. He can remove a human shirikodama to eat with his tongue, which is non-fatal but makes a person very foolish. This nearly happens to Reo twice; once when she offered it as a desperate apology, the other when Donpa was corrupted and tricked into eating a fake. Lu incorrectly thinks supernatural creatures are actually aliens. As an example, she claims kappa are actually The Greys, likely playing on both's reputation for Anal Probing. |

There are also lots of background kappa characters seen throughout the Yureimoto's home village.

Touhou Project kappa are a bit different, basically being an entire civilization of aquatic mad scientists. They do have the ability to control water, but generally aren't terribly adept at magic, and the only named kappa character is known more for her missiles and cloaking device. As per usual for the series, they're depicted as mostly human-looking girls with blue hair whose only kappa-like characteristics are overstuffed green backpacks evocative of shells and brimmed caps evocative of beaks and domed heads. How friendly they are to humans depends on which canon sources you focus on.

Super Sentai and Power Rangers: Kappas appear as a Monsters of the Week in a number of series. Dai Sentai Goggle Five's Kappa Mozoo was one of the many Synthetic Beasts of the Dark Science Empire Deathdark, and the one of two that were based on a youkai (the other being a Tengu). Ninja Sentai Kakuranger had a goofy but dangerous Kappa as the first foe of the Kakurangers, and the one who actually kickstarts the plot. Adapted as Parrot Top for Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. In another episode, two of the Kakurangers are affect by a curse that causes them to slowly turn into Kappas because Kappas are said to be the lowest form of Yokai. Rake Psyma Beast Gabara of Kyūkyū Sentai GoGoV uses a Kappa as his motif. Adapted as Aquafiend for Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue. Namiayashi from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger is an interesting spin on this. His body is literally half-tiger, half-water, making him the basis for the Suiko ("river-tiger"), which depending on who you ask is either a synonym for Kappa or a related Youkai. Adapted as Doubletone in Power Rangers Samurai. Tensou Sentai Goseiger: Giemurou of the Kappa, who combines his motif with a tick and The Host (2006). Adapted as Psychotick in Power Rangers Megaforce. Shuriken Sentai Ninninger had a Kappa mixed with a fire extinguisher. Adapted as Slogre for Power Rangers Ninja Steel. |

Papyrus has a very strange variation, set in Ancient Egypt. The hero encounters aggressive desert-dwelling creatures with bowl shaped heads. When bowed to, they respond in kind, the liquid spills out, and they lose their aggressiveness (and intelligence and ability to speak). Turns out they were under a curse from Sobek, which is lifted from them in the end. Not once is their similarity to kappas explained or mentioned.note Although it does make a bit more sense of their inclusion when you remembered turtles were viewed in a pretty negative light by Ancient Egyptians, even beinng asscoated with Apep and banned turtle meat.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: Kappa are among the monsters introduced in Lupin's Defense Against the Dark Arts class, and they're described as looking rather like scaly monkeys with webbed hands. Snape later tests them on this knowledge as a substitute and inaccurately states that they're native to Mongolia, but their entry in the spin-off book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them correctly identifies it as Japanese, followed by a sidenote from Harry remarking that Snape obviously never bothered to read the book.

Saiyuki: Sha Gojyo is supposedly one — Goku has been known to shout "Erogappa!" ("pervy kappa") at him in arguments. This is probably just a nod to the character in the original Journey to the West which Saiyuki was based on, since Gojyo has nothing in common with kappas in terms of looks nor behavior. (Since it's canon that Gojyo's father was a youkai, it was long assumed that he must have specifically been a kappa and that explained the nicknames; but this has been disavowed by Word of God.)

OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes: Dendy is revealed to be a kappa in "No More Pow Cards". The plot of that episode is that kappa don't have Pow Cards of their own because they are considered monsters that could never do anything heroic, when in reality they were just dislocated by urbanization and the stories of them drowning people were just unfounded rumors. She and K.O. go to the Pow Card factory to make the master computer recognize kappas. Dendy is an interesting case in that, while her parents resemble traditional kappas, she herself looks pretty human, having a very pale green for her skin color, a subtle beak and webbed feet. However, it's revealed that the more prominent physical features associated with kappas grow and appear as juvenile kappas reach maturity. In the third season episode "You're a Good Friend, K.O.", she reveals that her bowl is growing in, which she had been hiding under a beret. In the series finale, "Thank You For Watching The Show", her head bowl has gotten bigger and her skin greener as a young woman in her 20s. Given her parents' ages, it's likely she will resemble a full kappa in her 30s or so.
