Some creators are just fine with telling a straightforward story in their fictional worlds. Others aren't. They seem to have a compulsive need to present their readers with the minutia of everything the protagonist comes across (whether it's plot-relevant or not). If you've found yourself wondering why an author wasted your precious time explaining why their Cat Folk eat standing up, then you've most probably stumbled across lore porn.
Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Lore porn fleshes out a fictional world with lore (e.g., histories, maps, figures, biographies, facts, mythologies, religions, etc.,) that never actually tie back into the plot or characters. The lore only seems to exist as an attraction in and of itself and never serves a narrative function besides adding depth to the setting or at least trying to be entertaining.
Tolkien opened the floodgates with The Lord of the Rings, and writers of Epic Fantasy, in particular, have taken this trope and run with it. In mainline works stuffed with lore porn, the lore might take on a life of its own and become a primary characteristic of its style (or the franchise's style as a whole).
Obviously, authors can go overboard with this, but Tropes Are Tools and plenty of readers are in fact into lore porn and seek out fiction that can give them that escapist fix.
Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })Sometimes standalone works within a franchise tend to pick up the slack by being nothing but lore porn. They seem to exist only to satisfy a specific part of the fandom's craving for more lore-centric content. Cynical tropers may note that it's to tide them over till the next mainline entry.
A good rule of thumb to gauge whether or not something is lore porn is if it's in an appendix that explains every single thing the editor wouldn't let the author cram into the narrative.
Compare Continuity Porn.
Note: Lore porn isn't about a work of fiction having "too much lore". In the end, YMMV on what is or isn't excessive.

Watchmen. Each chapter ends with In-Universe texts that only serve to flesh out the world of Watchmen and the personal histories of the cast. They can be skipped without losing out on any of the plot.

Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and to a lesser extent, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice all thrive on this. The plots tend to be fairly simple but there's a massive amount of lore baked into the item descriptions, placement and level design, to the point fans are still arguing about plot points from the scraps of clues. Some of it can (and does) extend into Epileptic Trees and Wild Mass Guessing.

Tolkien's Legendarium is the Trope Maker, if not the Ur-Example in modern fiction. The entire narrative corpus was primarily created as a vehicle for Tolkien's constructed languages and the fictional history he was developing. Both of the two main works, The Hobbit and (even more so) The Lord of the Rings are frequently interrupted so a character can tell an abridged recounting of a song or story of the Elder Days. Some of these tales are told in even fuller form in The Silmarillion, which serves as the central reference for much of the lore of the setting. Ancillary works such as The Children of Húrin expand even further on these tales. And that's not even including works such as Unfinished Tales, The Book Of Lost Tales and The History of Middle-earth. All told, there are perhaps over a dozen individual works merely on the lore alone, and that's not even including the novel-length Appendices which gloss much of this at the end of The Lord of the Rings itself.

Harry Potter. The mainline books reference or delve into the backgrounds of different characters, events, spells, and institutions. Many are loosely tied to the actual narrative at best. It just wouldn't have the same escapist appeal if Rowling didn't go into detail on the inner-workings of Hogwarts and the greater Wizarding World. The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Quidditch Through the Ages, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them are this in spades by serving only to flesh out on the franchise's in-universe book of fairy tales, the history of a fictional in-universe sport (Quidditch), and the bestiary respectively.

The Sandman. Certain chapters peppered throughout the series are one-off stories about the main characters interacting with notable historical figures that do nothing but flesh out the setting and their personal histories. They're rarely referenced again and have no bearing on the plot or nuances of the characters.

A Song of Ice and Fire. The histories, lineage, and even banners of dozens upon dozens of families are delved into without factoring into the plot. That's not counting the detailed descriptions of local cuisines and customs that interrupt the narrative. The Fire & Blood tomes cranks this Up to Eleven, by being nothing but lore porn. They're fictional history books that delve into the background of one of the main families in the main series and nothing else.

Fallout, the Bethesda sister series to The Elder Scrolls, has audio logs which are similar...with Fallout 76 probably being the peak of it. The entire game's story is lore.

The Elder Scrolls series is known for this, but Morrowind and Skyrim, in particular, are noted for their many short in-game books that exist almost entirely to flesh out the setting. They're so prolific that they were even given their own page here on TV Tropes.

One Piece might start out looking like a silly shonen manga, but it has some of the most intricate lore in manga. It's fleshed out with maps, figures, and flashbacks that not only go into the histories of institutions, societies, and even species, but also the geography and weather patterns of locales. Even diagrams of the Straw Hat Crew's ships are drawn for no reason other than the fact that it's entertaining.

American Gods has chapters that tend to alternate between the main plot and random snippets of the lives of forgotten gods trying to survive in modern America. These snippets never tie into the plot and only exist to flesh out the setting.
