The inverse of Can't Drop the Hero— Rather than the game forcing you to use Bob at all times, the game makes you pick someone other than Bob to be the hero for one reason or another. Popular storyline reasons include Bob going missing, being incapacitated, or just not being allowed in whatever town the rest of the group is going to. Forcing Bob out of the party can lead to serious issues if your team always consisted of Alice, Bob, and Carol and you never leveled up anyone else—Now Dave, who is at level five, has to try to fight level fifty monsters ...poorly. The first involves entering the Fade to kill a demon -since only Mages can enter the Fade voluntarily, if your Warden is a Rogue or Warrior you have to send someone else (you can also choose to send someone else if your Warden is a mage). Mega Man Battle Network At one point in Mega Man Battle Network 5: Team Colonel and Team ProtoMan, MegaMan gets kidnapped and Lan has to use the eponymous team leader as a replacement Navi until the next mission, where MegaMan DS is the boss. Cue "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight. Mega Man Battle Network 6: Cybeast Gregar and Cybeast Falzar The first time uses a variant in which instead of going missing, MegaMan is instead incapacitated and in critical condition due to the Cybeast he assimilated trying to gain control of his body. Lan has to temporarily use a Link Navi (once again, the Navi in question depends on the version of the game) to Find the Cure! The second time, Lan and MegaMan's reunion with their friends is cut short when those friends get kidnapped, and when MegaMan mounts a rescue, the perpetrators kidnap him as well and set him (as Beast Out MegaMan) loose in the real world using a Copybot. After an attempt at another "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight (that failed), MegaMan retreats, and Lan has to send another Link Navi after him. |
