So someone's sitting down to watch something, say a basketball game or a movie. Mostly likely, he'll end up missing it entirely, especially after saying he's hoping not to miss a minute of it (see Tempting Fate). Or maybe he misses just the most important part (like The Summation of a mystery, or a major reveal in a Soap Opera) because of a special report. An alternate variation is for a character to have thought ahead and recorded a program in anticipation of missing it... only to have a friend or coworker spoil it for them before they get a chance to watch it. Or tape over it by mistake. May be done to the audience through Fight Unscene or Relax-o-Vision. Related to Finagle's Law. |

Harry Potter: This is almost a recurring theme, often involving the main characters missing Quidditch, or the Sorting Ceremony. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: When Harry and Ron are sent to Professor McGonagall's office instead of attending the feast at the start of term, Ron is disappointed to have missed seeing Ginny being Sorted, but is relieved to learn she is in Gryffindor. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: Harry and Hermione are summoned to Professor McGonagall's office at the very beginning of the year (for minor reasons), and are slightly disappointed to miss the Sorting ceremony. In the same book, Harry has to miss out on the first visit to Hogsmeade, because the Dursleys refused to sign his permission form. Later, Fred and George show him how to get there by stealth. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Because of Harry being given multiple detentions by Professor Umbridge, he misses Ron's tryout for the Quidditch team, to the anger of Angelina, the team captain. When he is later banned from playing Quidditch at all, he and Hermione get ready to suffer through Ron's utter humiliation of being the Keeping in the final, when Hagrid shows up to ask them to follow him. They do, discovering that he has a (literal) giant half-brother. When they get back, they hear the crowd chanting a mocking song the Slytherins came up with, and realize the lyrics are now celebrating Ron, and sung by Gryffindors. It turns out Ron started blocking goals like a champ after they left, and while initially put off that they missed the whole thing, Hagrid's problem is enough to make him forgive them. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: When Harry has been given detention by Snape, he misses playing in the Quidditch final, and has to ask Ginny to take his place as Seeker. |

In "When Aliens Attack:, when Fry (in present day) accidentally knocks out the Fox network with spilled beer. As a result, the aliens of Omicron Persei 8, who receive the television broadcast a thousand years later (in "present" day), miss the end of an episode of their favorite series. They're so upset they declare war on Earth. It's okay, though: at the end of the episode, everything's right back to normal.This became eerily reminiscent of a real life power outage at the Toledo Fox affiliate in 2007. We pray that the people of 3007 don't feel the wrath of the American Idol-loving aliens that pick up Toledo, Ohio's television signal. "Raging Bender" has the cast watching an All My Circuits movie in a theater where the audience vote for what happens next. However, vote seems to just be a sham to avoid showing expensive fight scenes that were never even filmed. |

Timmy was pleased he'd get to see it since it was an hour before his bedtime. But then his father remembered it was Daylight Savings Time and pushed the clock up an hour, causing Timmy to instantly fall asleep. Not only does Timmy miss the meteor shower, but to add insult to injury, his father hangs a "geek" sign on him. This, combined with missing several other things at night, is what makes Timmy wish that nobody needed sleep. In "Ruled Out", Timmy is extremely excited to watch an educational (but mostly violent) documentary about a giant Sewer Gator. Just as it's about to start, it suddenly cuts to a Sickeningly Sweet preschool show, Timmy's dad having remembered to set a child block on the TV to prevent Timmy from watching any violent programming. Timmy isn't happy, especially when his friends mock him the next day for not having watched it. However, he does get to watch the documentary later on after wishing his parents would care less. In the episode that was the Poorly Disguised Pilot for "Crash Nebula", the FOP portion consisted of Timmy excitedly telling Cosmo and Wanda that it was a special episode. Unfortunately, Cosmo and Wanda distract Timmy with endless guesses about what the episode was about and he ends up missing it. An angry Timmy then makes a point to create another whirlpool inside Cosmo and Wanda's fishbowl. |

Once again, the network had a movie scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, this time its highly-touted telecast of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. With the game was still tied at the end of regulation and going into OT, the network – determined to avoid another Heidi fiasco – stayed with it until its conclusion, which didn't come until 7:45 p.m. Meanwhile, rather than delay the start of Willy Wonka in the East, they opted to simply join the movie in progress... leading to another avalanche of angry phone calls, this time from parents of disappointed youngsters. | |

How I Met Your Mother: One episode features the gang unable to watch the Super Bowl live and everyone making a pact to watch it together later. You can guess how that goes. In that same episode, it shows the gang not paying attention to the half-time show from a past Super Bowl, since it's never exciting; besides, then it was only Justin Timberlake / Janet Jackson headlining. Another one features Marshall's bachelor party, with plans to watch a boxing match. Thanks to Barney, they are late, but think they can still make it for most of the fight. Cue them turning on the radio and hearing that the fight just ended with a moment that will be talked about for decades to come. Ted and Marshall's college friend, Steve, is known as "the Blitz" who is prone to miss all the cool things that had happened. It's said to be a "curse" in Wesleyan which is passed down to each generation. In "Blitzgiving", Steve is free from the "the Blitz" curse after it was passed down to Ted, who went to sleep early but missed out what his friends had been up to after he left the bar. Then, it was passed down to Barney who took the wrong cab going to Zoey's house. By the end of the episode, Steve becomes "the Blitz" again. |

The Famous Five: Members of the Five occasionally get angry when they miss out on some adventure. In Five on a Treasure Island, Dick gets injured by a flying piece of wood when they smash in a dungeon door with an axe. He and Anne go into the fresh air, and Dick feels sad to miss out on the possible discovery of the treasure. However, this turns out to be very fortunate, as Julian and George are then taken prisoner, while Dick and Anne are free outside. In Five Run Away Together, Julian and George witness night visitors on Kirrin Island. Anne and Dick are indignant when they hear about it in the morning, because Julian and George did not wake them. In Five fall into Adventure, Anne says that she does not like adventures, when they are lost in a wood overnight. She stays at home during the main adventure at Red's hideout, but regrets this afterwards, saying it's much worse being left out. In Five have a Wonderful Time, Julian and Dick see a mysterious face in a castle window through binoculars, but it disappears before the others get to see it. George is especially annoyed at not having seen it, especially as they are her binoculars. When they look again the following day, she insists on looking herself first, and does see the face. Timmy is very upset if he has to stay on guard, while the Five have fun. This happens in Five go off in a Caravan, and Five go to Demon's Rocks. |
