Move in the Frozen Time | comment |
You've just stopped time (or at least heavily slowed it), freezing everything in the world except you and maybe your bullets. But somehow one person is able to ignore this, and continues to move around just like you can. This comes in two major forms. The person either does get frozen but becomes Un-Paused before they should, or it's a No-Sell on the entire effect. This is not always a simple matter of just being immune though, sometimes it's part of Applied Phlebotinum, sheer willpower, or some sort of dumb luck of having something else interfere with the effect. It also happens a lot when characters with Super-Speed are in play; from their perspective, the world is always moving slowly, so all the time-stopper does is even the playing field. If a time stop is visually represented by the user's surroundings going monochrome or negative, expect this character to return to their normal colour. May come with an Imminent Danger Clue in the form of a "frozen" person's fingers or eyes moving slightly. If a video game player character can stop/slow down time, expect it to not work on bosses or Kung Fu Proof Mooks. A Sub-Trope of Anti-Magic. See also Ripple-Proof Memory for the ability to recall events that should have changed with time travel or temporal reset. Note that this is specifically when moving while time is frozen is a separate power from freezing time itself. Otherwise it's simply Required Secondary Powers for Time Stands Still, and thus belongs on that page. |

Heroes: Daphne can use her Super-Speed to move normally when Hiro stops time; when confronted over this, she flippantly responds that he must not be stopping it completely. When Hiro finally confronts Sylar and freezes time, he hesitates, reluctant to kill a man who is begging for forgiveness (from his dying mother, no less). Sylar then abruptly breaks out of the time freeze and confronts Hiro, who panics and flees. How Sylar was able to do this is never explained. |

Avengers vs. X-Men: Newly activated mutant, post-Phoenix dispersal, Eva Bell has the ability to create bubbles of frozen time, taking on the name Tempus. During the follow up series, A+X, she finds Doctor Strange interrupting one of her attempts to help Scott evade the Avengers, being informed that no one can truly stop time, though she is by far the best at slowing it he's seen. Strange for his part interacts with her by magically speeding himself up, and it takes him a moment to slow back down to a regular timeframe.

Steel Ball Run: When a Diego Brando From Another World (who has THE WORLD as his Stand instead of Scary Monsters) is attacked by Johnny's Tusk ACT 4, Diego stops time intending to cut off Tusk's arm, but then it moves its arm, shows its face through the hole created by its ability, and it's even able to manifest a little Stand cry. This completely scares AU Diego, who fully realizes he can't try to touch Tusk ACT 4 at all. However, Johnny himself is still frozen in time, and it's this crucial difference and exploiting it that allows AU Diego to still win.

The Outer Limits (1963): In "The Premonition", X-15 test pilot Jim Darcy and his wife Linda become trapped ten seconds ahead of their own time. They initially believe that time is frozen but they soon come to the conclusion that it is moving very slowly: at a rate of one second for every 30 minutes of their time. Although the Darcys can move about freely in this reality, they can't move objects. This presents a problem when they discover that their daughter Janie is about to be run over by a military truck which does not have its parking brake on. Jim later finds that he can move objects in his crashed X-15 and Linda's crashed car. He ties one end of the car's seatbelts to the back wheel of the truck and the other to the parking brake. When time resumes its normal course, the seatbelt pulls the parking brake and Janie is saved.note Since this episode was co-written by Ib Melchior, writer and director of the aforementioned The Time Travelers, it's also an example of Recycled Script.

In The Soulmate Timeline, Homura's time stop doesn't affect her Soulmates at all because they are metaphysically linked to her on the level of her own soul, which leads to Madoka and Mami at the start of the story having to deal with the world constantly stopping and starting around them while Homura is ignorant of these side-effects. Note that this only applies to her active Soulmates, as neither Sayaka nor Kyoko who are still inactive to the Soulbond get this immunity until they awaken to it when Sayaka contracts in Chapter 14. The similar stipulation that anyone touching Homura at the time is free from the time stop now also applies to anyone physically connected to her Soulmates too.

During the big shootout in Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Rebellion, Mami is able to escape the effects of Homura's time-stopping abilities by tying one of her ribbons around Homura's ankle, connecting her to Homura and allowing her to move freely. When Homura destroys the ribbon, Mami is frozen like everything else. Though not confirmed in the movie itself (since no one else ever attempts such a feat), there's some implication this required more than just grabbing Homura and is also due to the nature of Mami's powers, with her ribbons being born from her desire to stay connected to things.

Kamen Rider Drive: Downplayed by the Shift Cars and Signal Bikes, which have the same power source as the Roidmudes and can thus shield their user from Roidmude "Heavy Acceleration" (fields of distorted time which slow all people and objects to a crawl). The Roidmudes themselves also possess similar negation devices which they can share with their allies. Later the series introduces an upgraded "Super Heavy Acceleration" which is capable of weighing down even Drive, and requires the power of a Super Mode in order to counter. |

Kamen Rider Ex-Aid: Ex-Aid's Super Mode "Invincible Gamer" (themed around a videogame Invincibility Powerup) is capable of ignoring Kamen Rider Chronus's overwhelming "Pause" power. In its debut, Chronus tries to freeze Ex-Aid as he presses the button to enter the form... only for his Transformation Trinket to reactivate itself a few moments later, announcing "INVINCIBLE!". Gamedeus, the Final Boss of the game Chronus was created from, possesses Contractual Boss Immunity to his time powers. It's possible, albeit extremely dangerous, to gain this immunity by becoming infected with the Gamedeus virus. In the final episode, with the source of Chronus's powers weakened, Emu manages to do this without even being transformed into Ex-Aid, complete with a hand-twitch moment that's a clear Shout-Out to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (see above); he takes the opportunity to punch Chronus' Transformation Belt, damaging it enough to disable the Pause function for the rest of the fight. In the post-series V-Cinema, Genm's new form God Maximum Gamer Lv1,000,000,000 is capable of generating new games from thin air. One of these, Cosmic Chronicle, can negate the effects of Chronus's Pause because "time works differently in space". |

Sonic Boom: Tired of always losing to Sonic's superspeed, Eggman creates a device that slows down time for everyone and everything but him, leaving them frozen in time. He's somewhat perturbed to find Sonic is immune to this, though relatively speaking he appears to move only at normal speed. In Overlord (2012), it's mentioned that Time Stop was such a broken effect in YGGDRASIL that every high-level player worth their salt had an item or ability which protected them from it. Naturally this includes Ainz and the Floor Guardians. One Drama CD implies that resistance to time-slowing effects was also common among endgame boss monsters.

Dungeons & Dragons: In AD&D, the time stop spell halts time in a 15ft sphere around the caster for 1 round, freezing any other creature who enters it (while also giving the caster Extra Turns). However, it cannot freeze gods, demigods or unique creatures, and some high-level spellcasters have wards against the spell. In 3rd Edition, time stop accelerates the caster rather than slowing their surroundings, requiring things to work a bit differently: The Epic Level Handbook includes a feat called "Spell Stowaway" which allows a character to pick one spell and share in its effects each time it's cast within 300ft (as long as it would have a clear path to travel to them). One of the examples, used by the Phane monster, is choosing time stop so that you join the caster in their accelerated timeframe. Amusingly Inverted in the 3.0 version of Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting - Elminster's statblock gives him an immunity to time stop ported directly from 2e, despite this now making him unable to move even in his own stopped time. This was fixed in the Epic Level Handbook (and carried over to the setting's 3.5 revision), which replaced it with an immunity to the temporal stasis spell. |

When he discovers that even the utterly normal Subaru is unaffected (unknown to Ainz, because of his connection to the godlike Witch of Envy) he finally calls bullshit.

Shows up in two variations in regards to the main character Ren's time stop abilities in Dies Irae: First is when is time stop is fully invoked only him and the people he allows can move within the stopped time. All others are frozen. Second is when he has to fight against Schreiber. Ren has both accelerated his own time and slowed it down around himself to an extreme degree. The problem is however that Schreiber has an ability that makes it so that he is always faster than his opponent. The more Ren tries to slow down time, the faster Schreiber gets. Only an absolute stop in time would freeze Schreiber. |

In Thief of Time, when the second Glass Clock freezes time, certain characters are still able to move. This includes Death, Death's granddaughter Susan Sto-Helit (who doesn't really exist inside of time due to her parentage), Lobsang Ludd (due to him being one of the two bodies of the son of the anthropomorphic personification of time), the monastery sweeper Lu-Tze (who carries his own time in a rewindable device on his back), the Horsemen of the Apocalypse and the antagonistic Auditors of Reality.

In Super Robot Wars: Original Generation: The Moon Dwellers, the Fury have the ability to stop time with their Larseilam technology, its usage only limited by their own knight-like honor system and the fact the supply of Eitelm needed to fuel the Larseilam is low. Nevertheless, the fact that the Fury can stop time pushed the Earth Federation to ask Raul and Fiona Gureden to recreate their Time Flow Engine in the hopes it could be a countermeasure. Indeed, their hopes were not in vain, as when Fury member Jua-Mu is about to wipe out a Steel Dragon battle group in time stop, the Guredans arrive just in time in their Time Flow Engine-equipped mecha, which can move in the area afflicted by the time stop effect.

In Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, several beings close to divinity are immune to the D&D Time Stop spell's effects, most notably Balthazar the monk and Amelyssan, the final boss of the expansion. This is justified by them having almost ascended to godhood by the time you meet them, given how full deities also ignore mere mortal magic like the Time Stop. Balthazar is interesting in that unlikely every other Time Stop-immune character in the game he isn't strictly immune — he has an automatic counter-move to someone casting Time Stop that protects him from the effects, but if something keeps him from using the counter-move he will be affected (but thanks to all his other immunities and resistances it is very hard to keep him from using it).

Kamen Rider: Kamen Rider Drive: Downplayed by the Shift Cars and Signal Bikes, which have the same power source as the Roidmudes and can thus shield their user from Roidmude "Heavy Acceleration" (fields of distorted time which slow all people and objects to a crawl). Kamen Rider Zi-O: Woz's GingaFinally form is immune to Drive's Heavy Acceleration for reasons similar to God Maximum Gamer above - it has "the power of space", and in the infinity of space weight has no meaning. |

In the finale of Stardust Crusaders, the heroes figure out that DIO's Stand ability is to stop time for five seconds. DIO activates it and moves in for the kill... but when he draws close, Jotaro twitches. Paranoid, DIO immediately backs off, only to realize that Jotaro faked the effect by planting a magnet on DIO which would tug at his metal cuffs. But when DIO approaches for a second time, Jotaro punches a hole in his torso — he can only move for a brief window before he freezes again, and wanted to experience multiple time stops so he could get used to it (the magnet was only there to mislead DIO). Eventually, DIO gains a powerup which extends the duration of his time stop... not realizing that by this point, Jotaro has figured out how to stop time himself. Jotaro stops time just as DIO's time stop ends, tricking him into thinking that it's still in effect. DIO then proceeds to waste his window of movement within Jotaro's time stop right away, leaving him completely defenseless.

Dragon Ball Super In the anime, Hit's time leap/time skip allows him to travel .01 seconds into the future, making time for the rest of the universe appear frozen for the skip's duration. This gives him an enormous speed advantage over most people, with even Goku, who can teleport through time and space, struggling to keep up. However, that's not this trope. When Hit fights Jiren, the strongest known mortal in all of the universes, Jiren proves so quick Hit needs to use time skip just to keep up with Jiren! Hit decides that rather than use time skip to increase his own speed he'll continuously use time skip in reverse, on Jiren, to prevent Jiren from advancing into the future, leaving Jiren frozen in a "cage of time". This only works for a minute on screen before Jiren starts marching towards Hit, leading spectators to proclaim Jiren has "surpassed time". In the manga Hit's time skip freezes an individual target in time. How long the target stays frozen depends on how strong they are in relation to Hit. This means it can easily be countered by someone sufficiently stronger than him, such as a powered-up Goku or Jiren, meaning the infamous comment that Jiren is "stronger than time" holds a lot less weight in the manga continuity...at first. Hit later introduces the even more bonkers "time lag" ability that still fails to defeat Jiren, though it's still not an example of frozen time. The lag is actually slowing time down for one part of the universe while accelerating for another, making those in the "slow" part or those in the sped part up part but not in the know think something has been frozen. Again, this only briefly works on Jiren before he starts moving again like nothing happened, showing his power really does defy four dimensional space-time. |

Wakfu: Grougaloragran, Alibert, and Yugo all manage to break out of Nox's time-freezing spell through willpower and raw strength. Yugo is particularly notable since, charged up on the Eliacube's energy, he's still moving when Nox freezes time (albeit heavily slowed), only to accelerate even faster despite the frozen time while even the dragon Grougal was stopped for a little bit. However, this comes at a price on Alibert's case, though it's not noticeable on Grougal and Yugo since they're exceptionally Long-Lived (not that Yugo knew that about himself at the time).

Golden Wind: Diavolo's Stand, King Crimson, is capable of foreseeing and then "deleting" the events of the next 10 seconds. Diavolo experiences these 10 seconds normally, but everyone else is locked into their predetermined actions. When the effect ends, his opponents suddenly find themselves transported 10 seconds into the future, standing in a different position but with no memory of the intervening time and no trace left of what they did during it. In the finale, after Gold Experience evolves into a Requiem Stand, it is capable of resetting Diavolo's time-skip, preventing the future he predicted from coming to pass. Stone Ocean: Before Pucci's evolved Stand, C-Moon, can obtain its final evolution, Jotaro stops time and throws a javelin aimed at his face, yet since gravity is a force that transcends dimensions and Pucci's C-Moon powers are based around such force, Pucci is able to barely move a little in order to partially dodge the javelin and survive. |

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: "White Ice Dragon" Velzard, "Emperor of Darkness" Guy Crimson, and True Hero Chronoa/Chloe Aubert are all capable of moving freely in frozen time even when faced with each other's respective Time Stands Still powers due to the side-effects of their specific Ultimate Skills. When the latter two get into a "mock" fight where they use said powers, the onlookers who don't have this power (despite having their own Ultimate Skills) are equal parts awed and unnerved by how it looks like the fight is a series of Smash Cuts from their perspective. Rimuru starts investing in finding a way to get a similar power especially when Michael obtains a copy of Velzard's Ultimate Skill, time stop power included. It takes several repeat direct exposures to Time Stands Still powers with Raphael on hand to suss out a way to observe before he's able to even to start perceiving the frozen time. It pays off in a big way during his final clash with Michael where, after some intervention and help from Chloe in the first half, Raphael/Ciel finally cracks the code completely and he's able to start moving in frozen time. He uses his newly acquired ability to counter Michael's attempted coup de grace and forces his foe into a more conventional fight, one where Rimuru's own advantages quickly become apparent. |

She-Ra: Princess of Power: Loo-Kee Lends A Hand sees Hordak deploy the Time Stopper against the Rebellion, effectively freezing the whole of the Whispering Woods in time. The effect manages to miss Loo-Kee, whose magic is centered around evasion and obfuscation. After a few hijinks to determine no one else can help, Loo-Kee proceeds to play Spanner in the Works with Light Hope by getting He-Man. Similarly in their empowered forms, both of the twins are also able to shrug off the Time Stopper's effects, as is Orko, though his reason is never given.

In El Goonish Shive, initially, Sarah can simulate a time stop where she can have other people move by being them (which freezes her own body). Later, she learns to simulate other people becoming unfrozen while inhabiting her own or someone else's body in the time stop.

Accel World: The Brain Burst program projects its user's mind into a blue-tinted VR world created from Social Camera footage of their surroundings, while simultaneously accelerating their perceptions by a factor of 1000, making it look like the world is standing still. However, by expending an absurd number of Burst Points, a level 9 Burst Linker can also perform a "Physical Full Burst", re-connecting their accelerated mind to their body and briefly allowing them to move so quickly that even other acceleration users can see them move. Inverted with Black Vise's "Deceleration" - a brain implant which slows his mind back down to normal speeds while using Brain Burst, making him effectively frozen to others within the VR world. This gives him the unique ability to ambush other Burst Linkers - staying in the accelerated world for what would normally be years of subjective time, and setting his implant to turn off when his target enters. |

UFO (1970): In "Timelash", Straker and Col. Lake drive into the base to find everyone in it frozen in time (which means it happened while they were out). They find that they can pick up some objects, but others are completely frozen, and Straker soon finds a pattern: the objects they can pick up are those that weren't in motion when time was stopped. Later still, they also notice that they're slowing down and take some stimulant drug to remain able to move for a little more time.

Spoofed in the Johnny Bravo episode "The Day The Earth Didn't Move Around Too Much", where a series of coincidences falsely convinces Johnny that time has frozen for everyone but him. The best part of that episode is that after committing a few crimes because "no time means no rules", the judge of his case lets Johnny off the hook because he also experienced a time where the thought he was in the middle of a time freeze as well.

Charmed (1998): Used as a plot device to reveal when characters are not who they've initially been presented as being because witches and high-level demons are immune to being time-frozen. When Piper freezes time in a court room, once the witches are out of view, the frozen Cole suddenly starts moving, revealing that he was faking his freeze and had simply never been affected by the power in the first place. It's the first big clue that he's an extremely high-level demon. When Piper tries to freeze Chris before he disappears through a portal, she's shocked to discover the power doesn't work on him like it does with other whitelighters. He confirms that this is because he's like Paige — a very rare half-witch, half-whitelighter. |

In the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Timescape", a set of aliens from another dimension lay their eggs in a Romulan warp core (long story...), which makes time "freeze" for the Enterprise and the Romulan ship (actually it's just moving very very slowly, but close enough to frozen for our purposes). Our heroes can't move on either ship unless they're wearing a protective shield. However, one of the aliens pretends to be a Romulan frozen like everyone else, until Geordi notices that he moved when they weren't looking.
